George Welch/Ken Taylor

Does anybody know where I can get the numbers displayed on the tails of these two gentlemens p-40b’s on 07 Dec 41. Ihave contacted some research place online, but am waiting for a reply. I am putting together at least George Welch’s, but I hope to make Ken Taylor’s also. I just need the numbers on the tail.[;)] Thanks for any help possible.

let me look around i believe i have it somewhere. now just to find out where.

Jeff;
Thought I had your info for you. There are various color profiles in the SAM Combat Colors number 4 “Pearl Harbor and Beyond” but, not the ones for Lts. Welch and Taylor.
Sorry and good luck;
Steve

fightnjoe, thanks for looking, i have left a message with that orginization, but have not had a reply yet.
stgorder, thank you for looking.

i am truely sorry. i have been researching pearl for more than a decade. i have talked to veterans from both american and japanese units. i have talked to people who have built scale models of pearl as large as 1/350 and as small as 4 feet by 4 feet. i have many folders, notebooks, binders, and boxes filled with much of the information i have gathered but i cannot find the information you seek.

you have sparked me though and i will be continueing the search. this will be a personal thing now.

joe

Hope this helps.

2nd Lt. George S. Welch
P-40B, OD,White 160, Black 15P on tail

2nd Lt. Kenneth M. Taylor
P-40B, OD, White 155, Black 15P on tail

thanks keyworth. cant find it here.

joe

keyworth,
thank you for that info, just one question now. are the 160 and 155 the numbers above the 15p.

fitnjoe, thanks for your help, i finally got a reply from that organization, and they referred me to the historian at hickman afb, and i e-mailed him a couple days ago. when i finish these models i will try to post pics.

awesome jeff. glad it worked out. ed has some great info there. i am looking for the pics i have of the p40’s.

joe

i’m sorry, after i printed keyworths information off, i realized the numbers 160 and 155 are white on the tail, and now i’m curious if it is overall od or i have seen a picture od/gray? just wondering, i am trying to get this as correct as possible. thank you.

jeff i am not sure if this will help but the overall scheme as mandated in 1941 was od over neutral gray. the red/white stripes on the tail were to be removed and the only markings were to be plane/flight number and the star with red inner circle. as far as the plane/flight number units were changing over to an inline on the fus. side. the only unit that had that marking already at the time of the attack was 44th squadron. the others still had the markings on the tail.
to give an idea here is my attempt at a p-40b from the 18 th pg. this plane did not make it off the ground and suffered moderate damage.

also i found this pic on the net (one of many out there) that shows a plane of the 44th squadron.

hope this helps.

Jeff,

The markings would appear in the same style and location as the Hawk below:

Fightinjoe;
Do you have a B-18 coming? Where did you find it? Scale? How much?
Steve

Jeff;
This discussion has helped me out a great deal as these 2 planes were down a little further on my to-do list.

st_gorder the kit i ordered is execuform, from avusk. however do not order this kit. i have been waiting almost six months for it and not a bit of relief in sight. i am beginning to seriously doubt my choice.

joe

Fightinjoe;
Thanks for the advice!
Steve

sorry st_gorder didnt mean to sound rough about it. i have just been waiting impatiently for this kit and am rather unhappy with the service. i can understand being overwhelmed by work but six months to fill an order is outrageous. avusk may be a good company and they seem to have the kits to fill a niche, but i am trying hard to understand why a simple order for one kit is so hard to fill in six months. sorry didnt mean to highjack the thread.

Understandable.

Is this George Welch the same as the legendary “Wheaties” Welch, killed in F-100 testing?
