Guys: I recently watched the movie Patton and was intrigued by the mind games that went on between the American and German forces lead by the master generals Patton and Rommel. I would like to open up a discussion for a GB that honors the plight of the forces lead by these great men. If this is of interest, please chime in, I am VERY open to input and ideas…
A tad like apples vs oranges really… and the movie was waaay over the top, good one nevertheless. Romell was a master tactician who ignored logistics. Patton was a master logistician and leader, who really did not have to employ “master” tactics due to his materiel superiority. Their respective “high tides” happened at opposite ends of the war.
Anyways, I am sure you will get a lot more responses… several good books have been dedicated to the “Rommel” legend. If you are interested in generalship, I strongly recomend “How Great Generals Win” by notable military historian Bevin Alexander. I would actually pick Guderian or Manstein over either of the above two.
Finally, if you are thinking in terms of equipment/models, (and here I am going off the top of my head, never a good thing!), the only time they went mano-a-mano was at the beginning of Oper Torch, Kesserine Pass being the main event (late 43). You could do the M3A1 special scout car used by Patton
both of these generals were fantastic leaders who used cunning and the loyalty of the soldiers to win battles (that was almost poetic). I’d be very interested in this GB. I wonder how many people will include Tamiya’s famous generals kit in their build?
