Modeling Subjects Space

Here is a Gemini 3 space capsule model I just completed in 1/24 scale. I bought the kit at a recent model show I attended; manufacturer is identified as DHT Shippey.



This was my first paper model of a real space subject and I’m fairly pleased with how it came out.

Looks very nice. Not familiar with that kit, but if I see it it will certainly be something I’ll consider.

You all do realize that this “kit” is paper, right? Just print it out from your computer, cut out, roll or fold and glue it together with Elmer’s glue.

Thanks! Yes, it’s paper. I use Alene’s Tacky Glue, a thickened white glue, to cement the parts (you can’t use Elmer’s, because it’s too thin and watery - it will warp the parts).

Years ago I got kinda interested in paper models and found there are entire web sites dedicated to paper models. Most are free downloads! I did download several but never got around to building or even printing out any.

One I remember had some really cool looking castles and houses. Its been several years since I saw it and didn’t remember it until reading this post.

I usually print them on 100# cover stock.

The paper weight is usually called out on most kits. There are 3 main weights: 20lb bond paper, 65lb stock and 120lb card stock. I mostly use 65lb stock for most of the kits and 20lb paper (regular printer paper) for the small, fiddly bits. Paul mentioned Aileen’s tacky glue. That is good stuff, but I do normally use Elmer’s, spread really thin with a straightened paper clip as an applicator/spreader. It should look like you licked the paper and not smeared it on too thick.
