I agree with so many others, it is not bad, just another choice. Having just got back into modeling, it might be interesting to try them out. It might be a good test of skills and a neat learning experience.[2c]
I think it’s a great way to get newbies into the hobby. It could be a confidence builder before taking on more difficult projects. I’ve seen quite a few kids give a try at modeling buyt were turned off by their own results.
Modeling has to compete with gameboys, PCs and Xboxs for young people’s attention. If young people never get into the hobby now, what will it be 10 to 20 years from now (hey, I still plan to be doing this in my 60’s).
Choice is great! while I wouldn’t use them for this scheme, I wouldn’t rule others out for other schemes thats out of my painting schemes. Nothing is cheating in my book, afterall, while some people draw the line at prepainted photoetch, some will consider aftermarket cockpits ‘cheating’ too. Do what makes it fun for you.
We are in an age of “instant gratification”. Many, not all, want the results without having to put forth the effort. Look at the pre-painted kits produced by Revell Monogram and the pre-painted car kits by Testors, RM, Lindberg, and others.
Look on the bright side. If the production and sales of these kits keep these companies in the black they can produce kits for those of us who want to do the work. I would imagine that there are a few “scratch builders” out there who think of our kits as the lazy way out of model building!
As “they” say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. rangerj
Its good to give modellers the choice, and also as has already been mentioned getting kids and inexperienced people into the hobby,BUT if people buy these kits to avoid having to tackle intricate paintwork then they will never get the practice and hence improve. The learning curve can be very painful but it is always worth going through it.
LMAO… I agree wholeheartedly… [;)]
Well, some interesting views here, to be sure. I can actually see this idea of camo decals creating as many problems as it’s intended to solve, maybe more. For someone who has an eternal problem with silvering, some of these decals could be a nightmare!
Fade to Black…
I personally feel that painting camo(especially German) is a great challange. I’ve also been working on removing and adding detail to my kits. I look at my hobby as a kind of apprenticeship. My goal (as time and space allow) is to be as good as guys like Shep Paine, who I consider a master modeler.
The detail sets and decals are fine for those who want them. I personally have been using an Eduard Me-109G detail set as a guide to get an idea for where and what details to reproduce that I can’t see in my references.
ninedriver-I have found that Q-tips work good for a mottle look in 1/72.[2c]
Since I’m decal illiterate and challanged, this kit would be a huge nightmare for me.[:O]
That is why I never liked the prepainted models that Mongram put out. Half the fun is getting the paint right. Plus I build them for the challenge of getting things right. Although I have to admit that I do not always get the finish that I would desire. I would rather try it myself.
Each to his own!!
i couldn’t agree more!! no way a beginner would get all those decals on![B)][B)][B)]
I looked throught this post earlyer and wanted to see some of thre replys on this.I can see how this would help a person in building the confindince to do a model.I also see were this would destory teaching, paticents and self esteem in one abblitiy in doing things. In a world of hurry, hurry I want it now,a soicity as a whole loses a percious gift. That is the art of making something that is unquely you or yours.A craftmanship that is going to be of a bygone era.A population without paients and the abbillity to crate with the hands will be gone.Parents need to teach these things and modeling as well with sewing, needle work and a whole slew of other things that we need in or day to day lifives. So the ideal may be neat,it is another gemick to sell ready made stuff.Digger
I agree with the majority…it’s nice to have a choice if a modeller so chooses, but as for me…painting is too much fun to be left to camo decals.
Regards, Dan
I think it’s a good idea. You see, I love to build but HATE to paint! This would be an option for those like me. I don’t agree that people use the decal as a handicap for the rest of thier lives, but it’s good that it’s there. Just my [2c]
interesting idea for sure, but i’d rather just use my hp-cs. my favorite part of modelling is painting/weathering. wouldn’t think of using something like that myself, but wouldn’t judge someone who did. rock on i say. later.
Decals and me don’t always mix…paint and me don’t always mix…lol BUT at least with paint I can strip, sand, or ignore as I feel please if it is ruined. However if it is a decal and I ruin it, then I am stuck with the outcome. Personally I don’t “avoid” decals, but I definately don’t look for the largest and most complex ones I can find.
Those are personally not my taste. I like the special challenges that painting requires, and that is a large part of the reason i build model kits. I love painting. However, I can see myself using those as an experiment. what kit are they meant for?
eek never mind- fine molds kits. I am so stupid.
I have read in a lott of post that this might be a nice idea for childeren.
As far as I can tell Fine molds kits aren’t for childeren, they’re way to expensive for kids. To atract kids other types of kits are being used, such as snap-together kits and prepainted kits.
Secondly, there seems to be a general rule on this topic that it is not nice to say that you just dont like the idea of decals instead of paint. But it’s just an opinion, just as others have different opinion.
So I am going to say/type it out loud: I don’t like the idea of using decals instead of paint. If you don’t like the building proces, buy finished models. Painting is a part of modelling.
OK, I’ll just drop the hobby and buy Die-Cast from here on out… you my friend get my “raspberry of the day” [:P][(-D][;)]
Anyone want to buys some Tamiya kits, cheap? [:P]
