American-built radial engines had their gear casings painted grey. Was this a particular shade with it’s own name, i.e " Crankcase Grey ", or just a dark grey? Did different manufacturers use different shades or were they all generally the same? What would be an appropiate grey to use on my Academy Hellcat?
As with most paints the exact colour changed with every can. most were a neutral gray. some have been sited as dark gray but i suspect that it was more to oil build up than anything. the crankcases were also a gloss. It was to make easier cleanup of oil and gunk. if a radial was not leaking oil, it was out of oil!!
Hey dog;
Testors Model Master paints has an FS # for Gloss Engine Grey, it’s darker then Gunship Grey, but I’ve built Radial engines on real A/C and painted them Neutral Grey and even Dk Gull Grey and they looked really good, it’s you option bet there is a color for that shade
