Maddafinger and Plum. would be most curious on your take of the Babylon 5 series.
I actually haven’t seen much of it. I just wasn’t home when it was on I guess. From what I’ve heard about it, they at least made an effort to comply with real world physics, and that’s admirable. I hate nonexistant or arbitrary physics. That’s one of the many reasons I couldn’t stand Armageddon. If I see any reruns of it on the scifi channel, I’ll see if I can’t catch an episode.
I actually liked Babylon 5, but didn’t watch it regularly. But then again, it’s been years since I watched any TV shows regularly. I was always a Star Trek fan but Voyager went sour and I can’t stomach Enterprise. I know too much about Star Trek to deal with the inconsistencies. Should have been a Daedalus class ship. Am I ranting yet? I could go on…
Morning after, and actually I liked it! It wasn’t great but I was expecting horrible. I’ll definitely watch the rest. The previews made it look cheesy. I was pleasantly surprised. Anyone else?
I really liked it. I thought that the ads were a bit too cheesy as well, but it was well done. I will be watching the series. I did sort of miss the old Galactica. I picked up two of the models when they were re-released some years ago. The show has inspired me to look at how I can build them up.
I will have to admit that I did enjoy watching it and will follow the series. As far as the ships go… I think the new galactica looks awesome!! I know there is not much detail on the exterior of the ship compared to the old one but it makes sense to me not to have as much detail for a warship. The new vipers do look cheesy to me but I’m glad that they kept the old mark ll’s. The cylon ships could have been better but I still like them. The new basestars really sucked!! I also liked that they had an ECM ship along with the fighters. Overall I think that this series has a much better storyline than the original.
I liked the new Battlestar Galactica show. Couple of characters I disliked, but all in all it shows promise. The Raptor was an interesting vehicle, strange that they were able to take on so many civilians but only had a crew of two.
Babylon 5 was a good show, but when it went beyond the four original years, the final season was lame. I definitely did not like the Sheridan as President and the new B5 female commander. Also B5 Crusade was lame as well.
As far as the Star Trek series, I like Enterprise, although I can do without all the skimpy Vulcan costume scenes (she does look good though). Never seems like it adds to any of the plot.
I tend to prefer to watch any sci-fi series. I even watched the Firefly series on Fox. Decent premise, but the show went under rather quickly.
Y’know, for a Sci-Fi Channel mini-series, it t’wernt too bad. I loved the way the cameras reacted to the external (in space) scenes, looked like the cameraman was caught by surprise and had to focus on whatever caught his attention. Hate the new vipers. Glad that they kept the old ones. The Galcatica kinda looks like it’s awaiting drywall but they did keep the overall shape of the original. Personally, I like the new Cylon ships, I never understood why the originals needed three crew members anyway. An unmanned droid ship makes more sense. The ship movement and the use of thrusters is a huge improvement over the original series. 8 outta 10 IMHO.
I can’t believe they made Starbuck a chick.[:0]
-but the cylons are way hotter![:D][}:)][:p]

I look at it as the new show is not “Battlestar Galactica” but a new show with a similar plot. If I was to compare I like the old one better but still like the new one. I wish they would have done something like the old one did in terms of the earth/colonies parallels, ie egyptian influences in dress/architecture and so on.
I did like most of what I watched last night. The effects were better and it was missing some of the cheesy acting from the first series. Hower, I did miss the sound of the fighters/ships moving in space. I know it’s not realistic, but I didn’t like “mute” feeling during the space battles. I like the new Vipers and Cylon fighters, but not the Cylon basestars. I was hoping something more along the lines of the original series. If this gets picked up, I hope they bring back the original Cylon soldiers. I will be watching the second part tonight.
As for Star Trek, I liked TNG and DS9. I have mixed feelings about Voyager and haven’t seen enough of Enterprise to decide if I like it or not.
It sure looked like they snuck in the “Valley Forge” from Silent Running in there.
The mini-series was okay in my opinion. It went along with the old “BATTLESTAR GALATICA” for a good part of it except in the original Cylons were not made from the humans they actual were a different race that created androids to continue their existance (remeber the Imerperious Leader). I actualy still have the action figures of the first series. I did not like how it ended. It left it wide open for a series and it will be just like the other one where they find Earth and the Cylons just dissappear. In Galatica 1980 (Ithink that was the name of the last series when they found Earth) did anyone think that if the Cylons found Earth how would Earth defend against the Cylons when their technology was really inferior to the humans on the Galactica? I often wondered if the Cylons would really pervail. How about those flying motorcycle bikes with turbo engines? Cool huh.
I give then new mini-series a 6 out of 10. The Cylon Baseships looked like Vorlon technology from Babylon 5.
Remember, this is just my opinion.
Good movie there. I’ve always been a Bruce Dern fan.
The original Galactica series used the valley forge miniature for the agro-ships. The new series just picked up on that. Back in those days miniatures were used again and again. After the making of 2001, Kubrick had all the miniatures and plans destroyed so they wouldn’t have the same fate. Just watching the Twilight Zone you’ll see the ship and uniforms from Forbidden Planet over and over again.
I’d have to say that I absolutely love the new show! 9.5 out of 10 for me!!! There are so many reasons to love it! Here are only a few:
I love the epic feel to it that the original show never developed. The new writers have “dilated” the timeline and have given the destruction of the colonies the sad sort of respect it deserves. This is a huge, devastating event that the original show glossed over. Now, we have the time to see more of what happened and to understand just how small the fleet is compared to the vast expanses of the universe. Watch the shot in which the Galactica “jumps” into the Ragnar system, silhouetted against the HUGE nebula, and you’ll see what I mean.
The new show feels much more “human” than the original. It is permeated with a sense of desperation, from the actions of the new President and Adama’s reluctant acceptance of them, to Baltar’s futile attempts to deny his role in the destruction of his species. As Colonel Ty said, “No one is a rookie anymore.” No one is innocent, and everyone is deeply touched by the Cylon attack.
I think it is intriguing that neither race has energy weapons. The possibility of running out of ammo opens up a whole range of plot twists and changes. Plus, the extensive use of missiles by both sides seriously ramps up the tension. Who ever thought that the Cylons in the original show could have fatally damaged the Galactica with anything short of a kamikaze attack? Not I! But nukes… now we’re talking serious danger.
The Cylons in their new forms are absolutely terrifying! They are infinitely more dangerous than before. They are faster, sleeker, smarter, and they have the perfect camoflage. Over the course of 40 years (show time) doesn’t it make sense that the Cylons would evolve? Besides, the blonde Cylon said that the “tin can” Cylons still exist and that they serve their purpose. I don’t doubt that we’ll see them again. The new fighters are very sexy and the new Base Stars are the most horrifying thing in science fiction TV since the Vorlon Planet Killer. I’m very happy with their design. At least they don’t still look like a few hub-caps stuck together!
Now, don’t get me wrong; I still love the original Battlestar. And I love the new one, too. I’m sure that both shows can peacefully co-exist. The new show has so much potential! I sincerely hope that it finds widespread acceptance and becomes the long-running series that it could. A cold vacuum exists in TV science fiction today. Think about it! What are you going to watch? Star Trek: Enterprise? Please!!!
I’ll be faithful to the new show until it falls into the “alien-planet-of-the-week” trap like the original series did.

I just hope it doesn’t turn into Starship Troopers or Armageddon. Too many Sci-Fi movies/shows are cheesy and so much less than they could be. Sci-fi can me non-geek and take itself seriously as long as the characters behave like real people.
What was wrong with Armageddon? [;)][:p]
Seriously, though, at the risk of losing my credibility, I still like Armageddon, too. I just look at it in a comedic light and it works very well!
I think the new B.G. could be the best (and maybe only) serious sci-fi since Babylon 5. And I don’t mean hard science fiction, I mean serious as in tackling real world issues in a thoughtful way. [:)]

sad to say as much as I think armageddon is horrible in terms of plot, dialog, acting, etc… I’ll still watch it when it’s on TV, complaining the whole way about how bad new Sci-Fi movies are…
It was pretty good until they went into space actually. I loved that Steve Buscemi went to the mafia and got a huge loan right before they left, operating on the assumption that he’d not make it back. The condition that they never pay taxes again was funny as well.
Has any one heard when part 3 will be on. They kinda left me hanging.
