Hey all - I’m nearly finished with a 1/72 FW 189 but need some info on a particluar decal in the kit. The markings in question are 8 small red dashed lines, about 1-1/2" in length. They appear to be for wing walk warnings, but the instructions do not show where they should be placed. They even have their own number (6) on the decal sheet, but they are not shown on the plans (typical for this Italeri piece of caca kit). My only reference is a squadron profile book that does not show an overhead scheme. I have searched the web for info on this, but to no avail. Can anyone help me?
This kit has very few markings as it is, and placing these in question would help to brighten it up a bit.
I did a construction review which is under the Axis tab on my site and it shows those markings - unfortunately my server is suffering technical difficulties tonight so you will have to wait until tomorrow to look at it.
Stinger,
Here is a build up but my monitor has issues and everything looks dark so I cannot see if those markings are visible or not.
You might have to wait for Swanny’s site (It is pretty good if I do say so myself). http://modelingmadness.com/scotts/axis/luft/fw/189.htm
I got though to your site, Swanny, and those pics really help! The placement is nowhere near what I was thinking. Quite an awesome build BTW, and I see some details that I can still scratchbuild and add.
Philp - Thanks for that link. This is the same kit I am building, and interestingly, the reviewer used the same decal scheme that I have used. He did however, use the wrong upper wing balkankrueze (at least according to the kit directions). Reading the review was like building this thing all over again. I thought he was rather kind in his comments about the fit on this kit. Perhaps that is due to his experience and superior skill, but all I have to say is that it’s a total piece of crap in the fit department.
Anyway, I hope I can get this finished in time to post it before I have to leave town again.
Stinger… glad to see you back on the forum… you’ve truly been missed buddy. As for your question… well I got 'nuttin. Oh well sounds like you got some good advice anyway.
I have always wanted one of those, but I want it in 1/48 and I think the only one in 1/48 is MPM. Is that correct? If so how good is the kit. But anyways I cant wait to see pics of your finished model stinger, as it is an intereting little bird.
The link that philp posted above shows the exact same model as mine, and in the same scheme. The reviewer had exactly the same problems that I had, but it will turn into a nice little model with a bit of putty and patience.
I’ll try to get this finished before I leave on Sunday.
That’s all I need, after this UHU, and my Bv141, yet another canopy masking challenge to make me even crazier!!!
Matt - it is so hard to resist the temptation to just get it finished, but already I see the results of that. I spent three hours yesterday putting on the little red stripes, only to find that I missed the little jog on the outboard, fore/aft stripe. Also the starboard side appears to have silvered on me. Oh well, we’ll see what the clearcoat can do.
One other side note on clear flat coats: I’ve found that if acrylics are cured enough, you can over coat them with a clear flat lacquer, which gives me the exact finish I’ve been looking for. It also hides a lot of flaws in the original paint (which I always seem to end up with). I was even able to spray it over the flat/Future coat that I put on before it.
Anyway, maybe I can get in a progress pic, but I kinda hate to spoil the presentation. Like watching movie trailers, you feel like you’ve already seen the movie. We’ll see how far I can actually get.
