I am going to decal tomorrow and haven’t used future before. Should I spray only the areas I am decaling with future or should the whole vehicle be coated? Greg
I would spray the whole thing. That way you don’t get uneven layers.
I just do the areas needed. I paint it with a brush.
Brushing it only on the place where you will apply decals will save you a lot of Future and time but apply a flat coat on the entire model afterwards to remove uneveness. I myself apply it on the entire model to prepare it for weathering and decaling.

You can do it either way depending, as the others mentioned, on your desired result. I’ve actually taken to spraying the whole model with a thin coat through the AB (it sprays straight out of the bottle) as both a surface for decaling and also for weathering/washes. The Future is self-levelling but if you only apply it in specific areas it will create a subtle demarcation line with the non-coated areas. You can feather this with a q-tip dipped in Windex and carefully rub the area to soften the Future and blend it in but it takes some practice.
Future is great stuff, highly recommend it. If you really want to become an expert on Future, I recommend Matt Swann’s, aka Swanny, excellent dissertation on Future.
I have tried both methods but I like to spray on the future with an airbrush better.
Sounds like I need to do a light overall coat of future. I have not used oil washes before so if now is the time to do it then would someone have a helpful suggestion as to how to do it? This is a Desert Storm M60A1 with Gino’s nonslip technique applied so dark weathering may not be the best approch. Something light might be better. Greg
