Future or gloss coat?

Quick question. I just painted my S-3 viking with MM Acryl white on the bottom and a mixture of aggressor gray and gloss white on top. My question is should I use future or a glosscote before I lay down decals? I will be doing an acrylic wash in the gear wells and a tempera wash on the surfaces. Any input?

Either. I prefer the Future for a couple of reasons, cheaper and easier to clean up!

And it smells nice, too! [:)]

[#ditto] My rule for me is if your going to cover it up with another clear coat ( flat or gloss ) then I use Future for my decals and washes. And yes it has the Fabreez smell.[(-D]

I much prefer Future personally, but either will work.

Another vote for Future.

Ditto Future.

I hear rumor it can actually make floors shine…

Future’s the way to go.

Oh come on! Future can’t be that good. Next thing you’ll be telling us Windex cleans windows. When will the insanity end?

Yeah…Jon’s got a point…I’ve heard that people use Future on floors as well…go figure.
I prefer to use Future for the glosscoat for the decals and for the wash…the turpenol and white spirits I use with the oil paints or enamels for the washes just doesn’t touch the Future - so my paint and decals remain safe from the oils and enamels.
But if you use a commercial clearcoat (Humbrol, Testor’s, whoever…) they’ll be attacked by most thinners - guaranteed to happen exactly when you don’t want it to.
Besides, I’ve had plenty of clear enamel coats go yellow over time.
Never had the yellowing problem with Future.

From the looks of this thread I think we should start a e-mail campain to get the company that makes future to include thinning instructions for bruing/AB’ing models with.

Sorry to disagree, but I prefer gloss coat (lacquer). Yes Future is cheaper and I agree it has its uses but I’ve found that it gives me too much trouble when applying decals. In particular when using MicroSol. Maybe it’s just me, but that has been my experience…

Future or Brite gets my vote too and I agree it’s best before applying decals and it’s awesome for sealing them. However, I can relate to Ross. it does make decals a tad hard to slide and position in place on a model but it’s still the best way to go as a gloss coat.

I know what you mean. The other day… my wife put a Q-Tip in her ear[:O]

Next thing you know she’ll be using your chalking swab to apply eyeshadow.

For the decaling problems, do you decal over dry Future? I’ve been laying my decals down in a fresh puddle of wet future for a couple of years now and have had the best decaling results in my life.

I’ve used both ways with good results. Do you ever have any issues (using the puddle technique) with the decaled area not being “level” with the rest of the surface?

Ewww…what a dumb place to apply a sludge wash. Women!

I had this happen once when I got a little too “generous” with the Future. What i did was spray two or three thin coats of straight Future over the whole area. This leveled things our pretty good. After a hearty spray of flat coat, everything gelled nicely.
