I keep reading about using future for decals. New to me! do you apply it before and after applying the decals? What if you want a flat finish?
Excuse my ignorance, I’m used to just following the instructions that come with the models.
Here’s what I do … others may have different approaches but this works for me.
Apply future to the area that the decals are going to be placed (or to the entore model). Because decals adhere better to gloss surfaces than flat finishes, this helps with the process. After the furture is dry, I apply a decal set solution, the decal, then a decal sol solution. After 24 to 48 hours I will apply a dullcote to bring the entire model back to a flat finish.
just as a quick addition. Sometimes the decals appear more flat than the surface after a flat finish is applied, so now I always seal the decals with an additional coat of future, then put on the flat finish. This problem didn’t happen too often but who wants that after putting the work into a model.
One more addition: some folks add Tamyia flat base to future in a ratio of 30% flat base to 70% Future for a flat top coat.
I’m going to be trying that for the first time soon.
