FSM Final Details: Procrastination or long-term planning?

What build are you putting off?

Among my many unbuilt kits is a Trumpeter 1/350 scale prewar USS Saratoga (CV-3). With it resides a Gold Medal Models photoetched-metal set of rails and details so extensive that, if you swat a desktop with it, it sounds like slamming a screen door. I imagine an exquisite superstructure and a flight deck filled with yellow-winged biplanes.

Will I ever build it? Well, I still have it. Do you need an answer right now?

You probably have several models in your collection that are in the same category. So, I ask: Is there a build you are putting off? In 150 words or less, tell us what that kit is (please specify manufacturer and scale) and why you haven’t built it yet. Also, give us an estimate of how long it will be before you dig into that project.

Of course, take all the time you want before you start that model. But if you want to tell us about it, please provide your answer here or e-mail it directly to me by Monday, Oct. 6, 2014.

If it is selected, your answer will appear in the February 2015 FineScale Modeler “Final Details.” For attribution, be sure to include your name and where you’re from.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I have the 1/350 Hasgawa Akagi with some extras.Akagi has always been one of my favorite ships and I was thrilled when it came out. However I will not build it until I retire and move. There is no way I’m going to sink the time and effort not to mention the cost into that big boy and have it damaged or destroyed while making an interstate move.So I will wait and hope that I don’t loose my abilities too quickly, and can still get it done after I retire in a few years.

I finally got hold of the Revell 72nd Type VIIc U-Boat a couple of years ago after years of wanting it. I have all of the AM for it that I can get hold of. But, apart from the size, I have not build a ship in years and have no experience in weathering ships, and I really want to do it justice. So my plan is to build a smaller kit and practice on that, and then I will finally (I hope) get round to building the big one.

I have the old Bandai 1/24 Shiden 21 N1K2-J (George) that I found on Ebay about 4 years back. I have been putting off building it for two reasons. The first one is lack of display space. Once the weather cools off a bit, I will be able to make a good sized display case in my garage. Being a woodworker, I can make one to my own specifications. It gets pretty hot in there so I need cooler weather.

The second reason is the extensive modifications needed to make the model accurate. Though it has a full engine, it is missing tons of details such as oil tanks, wiring, plumbing and other parts. The cockpit needs some serious modifications as the included IP doesn’t resemble the actual one. I have been gathering my documentation and some PE details for the cockpit. Eduard doesn’t make Japanese instruments in 1/24 so I have some German ones that resemble the Japanese version.

Hopefully I should be able to get to this huge beast in the not so distant future.

I have the big Revell Flower Class Corvette. I bought it before the fancy version with lots of PE and stuff came out. I will have to build a lot of scratch things, like a new main gun. So keep putting it off both because it will be all over my workbench it is so big, plus the amount of work I will need to do.

The very first kit in my stash. The Lindberg Destroyer. I bought it 15 years ago, with plans to make it RC, and geared to scale speed. As far as I know, it’s still intact in the box. I have not built it yet because my focus has been aircraft modelling, with a hesitation towards the RC complexities. A severe case of procrastination.

I recall reading an article about this very same kit and how to bring it up to fairly accurate standards. I can’t recall where I saw the article but you can probably find it if you google this particular model.

I purchased Iron Shipwrights 1/350 USS Rudderrow, with the intention to convert it to the USS Formoe. My father served aboard the USS Formoe from 1951 to 1953. It will be my first resin build. This being the case, I’d like to get a few more builds completed before I attempt this build. This build will have a lot of personal emotion attached to it, since my father passed away four years ago. I wish he was still here to give it to him in person, but, Instead, I will give it to my mother in his honor.

Thanks, Tom. For attribution, can you tell me your full name and where you are from? Thanks! – Mark

Thanks, Mark. I included the info in an amended post.

Thanks, plasticjunkie.
I’ll have to look that up. I was told by a modeller years ago, who had built three of these, that you must put a counterweight, sort of like a sailboat keel, on the hull to keep it balanced. I have seen videos of completed destroyers in operation, but some are zipping along really quickly. I just think it’s a neat kit. I remember building a few smaller lindberg ships as a kid (these ones where you had to build the electric motor) and taking them to a local pond, to while away the day.

Hi Tom. Where?

Hi Mark. It’s in my original post above.

I see it now. Thanks, Tom – MH

Sorry I couldn’t be more help but the article was really an in depth build involving serious modifications. I tried for several hours to hunt it down but was un able to find it.

I like the big Lindberg PT Boat, another RC candidate and a bit easier to detail.

Thanks for looking. I appreciate it. I seem to remember seeing an article along those lines, several years ago. I was told by a salesman at a hobby shop once that you can use RC servos as the propulsion to get more control. I’ll get around to it…someday.

Yeah, that PT boat is a good one as well. More stable? too.

I have the MPM He177A-5 with the Big Ed photo etch waiting on my skills to catch up. Also on the shelf are three Classic Airframes Avro Ansons, DML M1A1 AIM, DML Panther G, a couple AM Avengers, …well, the list goes on. One day.

I have a Tamyia F4U-1A Corsair that I have been wanting to build, but need some practice before I tear into it.
