FSM Aircraft ID Quiz #... aw heck, I lost count... CLOSED

Okay, I’ve been inspired by upnorth’s inside-out quiz and amused by the ‘keep it real easy and don’t bore me’ quiz, so the official FSM Aircraft ID quiz returns… yet again…

Man, I have no staying power on this forum sometimes… but that’s the penalty I pay for trying to spread the wealth over the whole of the internet…

Anyhoo, I kinda wanted to go back to the regular ‘here’s a bird, what is it’ kinda thing. Unlike some others who whine, b*tch and moan when these little quizzes are too hard, I like 'em when they’re difficult. It’s a helluvalot more interesting that way… easy pickins ain’t no fun…

For those who have not been in on this gig before…

PLEASE DO NOT POST ANSWERS IN THE THREAD. Send them via PM.

The answer will be given on Saturday, September 16th, 2006.

Fade to Black…

I say keep 'em hard. I’d like to consider myself well-versed in a large number of aircraft, and it’s rare when I don’t at least recognize something, even if I don’t know the designation. These quizzes, though, consistently show me aircraft I never knew existed. I always learn something new from these suckers.

That being said… I have no idea what the heck that is! (Of course it isn’t a B-36. It’s got too many engines! Duh! [;)])

Glad my inside out quiz is going over well with somebody, I sort of did it as a whim after having the opportunity to sit in and photograph some cockpits at a small airshow this past weekend.

As for what we have in this here quiz, beyond saying it looks distinctly interwar in design, I haven’t a clue.

It’s definately a “whatitiz” or else a “one-o-them”.

In the past I’ve been accused of being merciless with the quizzes.

I don’t think that’s been the case up to now, as there hasn’t been a single quiz subject which I felt would provide a genuine challenge to the folks here on the forum. Well, the Bonney Gull might have been close… but in the history of the quiz there’s only been one stumper, and I thought that it was a simple one. So who knows how this will go…

This image came from the web. But it is, as far as I know, the only image to be found on the web. If you were to do a search on Google for the name of this bird, (manufacturer and designation/model number) you would come up with a grand total of five hits. That’s it. And only one of them is somewhat informative.

So this time 'round, you’re gonna have to DIG… and dig deep. The sad thing is, this thing is so obscure that hints would probably be useless. Matter of fact, beyond giving the country of manufacture, I really can’t think of any truly useful hints to throw at you folks.

But here goes…

The designation/model number of this design is the same as the model number of a handgun produced by a company whose name has become one of the world’s most recognized among manufacturers of firearms.

Shheeeeesshh , tough one . But thats the fun of it . [^]

Don’t change how hard these quiz’s are, they’re more fun that way. It challenges you beyond what you can find on the net,and what we all have stored in our heads. We are all historians of one level or another.

Yes it is tough, and I hesitated to use it because I’m not sure that it gets much more difficult than this… unless of course you’ve run across this thing before, that is.

Another clue…

The aforementioned firearms manufacturer’s name, although pronounced as one syllable, could also be broken down and pronounced as two syllables… in which case it would sound the same as the acronym for a medical phenomenon which can sometimes be experienced by pilots of high-performance aircraft. The spelling is slightly different, however.

Why is it that you do not want us to openly answer the question on the forum thread?

Are you afraid someone here might challenge your pick of the answers?

Because then only one persone can give the correct anwser. Once the anwser is known there’s no fun for the rest…

This is the way Blackwolf has hosted many quizzes and it works very good.

I believe that it is a RTFS Mk. I. That is short for Rocky The Flying Squirrel. You thought I giving the answer away didn’t you. Right now that is the closest that I can come to an answer. By the way that is Frost Bite Falls airport if I am right. [:D] Back to the search.[banghead]

I do so love it when a third party has to “speak up” for the person to whom the question is directed, especially when the essence of the answer is the typical circular logic, i.e., “This is the way is has been done here and we like it that way”.

So please forgive my obvius ignorance in stepping into a little clique that obviously is set in its ways. [bow]

Sorry to bring you the bad news, Mr Remco, but in my new forum, more then one person has already given the correct answer and so far it seems all who are participating are having fun, so I be believe this contradicts your blanket statement Mr Remco sir.

Ok, let’s not be a buzz kill. There’s plenty enough room on these forums for all the fine quizzes.

Yes, please. Let’s keep it civil.
Anyway, on to my guess… One ugly spud! I believe the designation is UG-1LY lol

Man…that’s a tough one…I’ve done a little digging…and tried to twist my logic to suit the cloudy clues…but obvioulsy I’m not there yet.
And regardless of what others may feel about the specific administration of this particular thread, I find the mental gymnastics entertaining. Even if I can’t answer the question, I still enjoy trying to look - or just waiting for the answer.
I’ll keep trying until the answer is posted on Saturday…
Thanks mate…

Yeah, cloudy clues they are… I just don’t know what else to throw you folks.

Okay… I give in…

This aircraft is of Soviet manufacture. It was built in 1938 and is of wooden construction. Its intended use was as a utility aircraft and a crew trainer. It did not enter production.

That’s not much to go on, I know… but I simply don’t have much more info about this bird.

Fade to Black…

We have been trough al this before, let’s not repeat a discussion of a few months ago.

And there is no need to be sarcastic.

LOL…nice one…I was gonna ask if anybody wanted some cheese to go with the whine…
Still haven’t been able to find that elusive reference…nor have I been able to think sufficiently laterally (apologies, Mr. DeBono) to figure out the cryptic clues.
I’ll just have to stay tuned till tomorrow.

Hmmm…

The firearm manufacturer clue has got me thinking…

As for the “other” on this thread:

I do admit that the clues are a welcome addition. They are sufficently hard not to give anything away, but accurate enough to go slapping your head once the answer does show up saying “Why didn’t I see that?”

But I still don’t know what the heck it is. [(-D]
