In both photos, ‘yer lookin’ at the one and only example of this bird to have been built.
Also, some have submitted replies giving the correct name but not including the variant. Usually I’d let that kinda stuff go. But in this case it’s ever so important because even though it has the family resemblence, this aircraft is completely different from all of it’s ‘brethren’. (Indeed, almost all of the aircraft in this family are totally different from each other…)

The answer:
Mirage 4000
I guess I picked a good one here; thought it would create some confusion and it did! I expected some would ID it as the Rafale prototype and that was, indeed, the most popular answer. The EFA and even the EAP were suggested as well as the Saab 39 Gripen.

General Info - One really crappy image and a buncha info & specs which seems to be generally accurate.
History of the Mirage 4000 - This series of pages is in French, but it’s very interesting to go through. (Especially if you use a text translator) Alotta the photos aren’t of the greatest quality, but they’re useful, nonetheless. There’s a comparison of the Mirage 4000 and the Mirage 2000 as well as coverage of the Mirage G8. The last page is an excellent walkaround of the Mirage 4000 as it looked just out of the paint shop of the museum at Bourget.
‘Desert’ Scheme - There’s just two images on this page, but they’re good ones and they show the Mirage 4000 in the scheme it wore for the 1987 Paris Air Show.
Hmmm, trying to decide what the next one will be. One of you gave me a good suggestion (thanks, Caine!) and I may just use it.

I hate do disagree with you, but several years ago (when I was just a budding NBC Puke), I found a book in the local university library on the effect of nuclear weapons that were dropped at US test sites (Bikini Island and Nevada). It was a highly scientific tome, but had a lot of neat graphs and pictures showing the different types of equipment involved and the effect of heat, blast and radiation on the target and surrounding areas. Amongst the pictures were a couple of shots of B-29’s taken at the moment of release of the weapon (think both were taken during the early testing at Bikini after the war). May not be pictures taken during combat but the bomb was being dropped. Don’t remember what the name of the book now but think it was published by the Atomic Energy Commision sometime in the mid 70s.
That was a good one blackwolf! It made it really tough seeing as how it looks like the combination of so many different Dassault aircraft. You can see characteristics of the Mirage, Rafale and the Eurofighter all in one plane.

So sorry I missed that last post. I actually knew that one, just the result of having a good friend who is a french plane lover…I know, I know its an illness, we’re all hoping for his quick recovery.

I am not a great traveller at all, but I saw the 4000 fly … in Farnborough and only a few seconds as it took off and disappeared; impression was like with F 15 : power. Unfortunately, it was a Dassault private venture and Armée de l’Air could not afford it ( did we need it anyway is another question, but if the national Air Force does not buy national planes, you have few chances to sell them abroad) on the other hand, there are great chances that all this engineering served with further projects like Mirage 2000, which was developed at the same time. By the way, did you know that Mirage IV was a bigger design of Mirage III ? (you see, guys, thre are not only bigger F/A 18 )

I grew up with a sister and later went with a gal both of whom talked like that. With my sister it was a couple year fad. But she was my sister; I was supposed to hurl insults at her anyway. But the gal I went with just never lost it from her childhood, and she did grow up in the land of smog, so it was understandable. Did get old after awhile tho… [banghead]
