The IL86 would date the photo as mid to late 80’s so the subject would be the tanker version then?

Or an EW/Command Post variant. But a tanker is more probable.

Nope! The answer next Wednesday…

Fade to Black…

It’s the result of a russian spy dropping french airliner plans in the gutter.

By the end of 1981 487 items of Tu-16 complexes were there as the part of the Long Range aviation and about 474 items in the Naval Air Forces. And about two nundred of them were the launcher of K-10m complex. As for the other sub-units of the Forces and in the industry the 156 aircrafts were exploited. In the eighties’ years the mass withdrawal of Tu-16 model and the exchange of it for the supersonic Tu-22M model. That’s why on the eve of the Soviet Union disintegration about 173 models of Tu-16 aircraft were saved on the European part of the country. Eighty one aircrafts were the property of the Air Forces and ninety two of them were given to the Navy.
After the signatures were put under the Belavezhskiy agreements more then a half of the Tu-16 (121 aircrafts) were given to the Ukraine, 18 items to Byelorussia and the other ones to Russia. But already in two years only 19 aircrafts flied in the Ukrainian sky and about 49 of them were stored at the bases. In Byelorussia it was not even only one Tu-16 at that moment. In Russia Tu-16 were officially withdrawed in 1994.

Go on - put them out of their misery

Patience guys! I sometimes do wind up being a day late with these, hence the term ‘Wednesday-ish’.

Alrighty, we had a total of 30 replies with 20 1/2 of them being correct; and one late retract/re-guess. (good move) Anyhoo, here’s who got it right:

The answer?

Myasishchev M-4 (or 3M or M-6) Molot (Hammer) - NATO codename ‘Bison’

I dunno what exact variant this particular aircraft is (M-4 Bison-A or 3M/M-6 Bison-B/Bison-C), so I accepted any of the following:

M-4
Mya-4
3M
M-6
Molot
Bison
…or any reasonable combination…

Speaking of combinations, I said that there were 20 1/2 correct answers, but undoubtedly some may have noticed a total of 22 names listed. One fella called it an IL-28 Bison! [(-D] And there was also one who called it a Tupelov Bison. And yet another said Mi-4 (which is a helo), but included ‘Bison’. I was feeling generous and gave 'em all the score anyway, albeit only half! LOL

As I thought would happen, some identified it as a Tu-16 Badger, which is understandable! Oh, and spelling really doesn’t count in most cases, for those of you who expressed concerns. Another thing; I don’t usually reply to emails regarding the quiz; so don’t take it personally!

Oops! Almost forgot; for more info on the Bison, go HERE.

The next one will be… well, ya’ll will find out!

Fade to Black…

I didn’t reply but a saw a picture that looked really close listed as a Tu-Bison. Someone musta found that site.
