Is anyone else having problems with the speed of the forum, This is the only site on my computer that has this problem, it takes 70 to 80 seconds to download a subject, everytime you switch sublects you have this delay, It seems that their sister webside is also a bit slower then before, it seems like all those banners slow the system down? Doesn’t seem all that slow on my machine. (Although I am usually connecting on a high-speed network.) There are several things taht will slow down the load times. Images in people’s signature lines (yes, I’m one of them!), and posted images of people’s work. The page has to load all of the code & images associated with the actual page, the signature images, and the actual photos. It is sometimes a great deal of info.
(To compare, look at how long this thread of yours takes to load compared to one of the group-build pages that is image heavy.)
This place runs considerably slower than any other forum I frequent. I’ve never liked this “new and improved” board, apparently a lot of other people didn’t either since they left after the switch.
Mike, did the previous version of the forum allow people to post their photos directly into their messages? That would have sped things up, I assume, because the images would have been hosted on the same server as the code is hosted. Right now, all those images have to be called in from other servers that may be very busy/slow.

I have noticed that it seems to have been slower over the last two weeks or so, the outer page loads quickly but the content takes quitea whilelonger at the moment.
Previous to this, it wasn’t the fastest but was not slow to the point worth mentioning.
Vance, that would be right except for the fact most people dont have the slow issue on other forums that are just as (or more) image heavy that require users to host elsewhere. Somebody has screwed the pooch with the so called upgrade and no one in admin gives a hoot, this place is slowly dying. We get new people joining everyday yet the forum posts seem to mainly consist of the old die hards, hell if it wasnt for manny this place would be a ghost town (almost)

hmm, I guess I really only dropped in from time to time before “the switch”, so I have nothing else to compare it to. And I have little interest in maintaining contacts in multiple forums, (I already don’t have as much time as I’d like to actually model!) so I can’t compare to them either. It doesn’t seem bad to me, but as I mentiomed earlier I’m usually accessing it on high speed connections.
I’m on a 1500/256 ADSL connection and it takes me on average 10-15 seconds for a low/no graphics page more for alot of images. On one of the aquarium sites I use a low/no graphic page would be 3-5 seconds hi graphics start time would be the same with images quickly loading before ones eyes, and as for a site like militaryphotos.net very hi amount, hi res images generally less time than the average time here for a low graphic page (I generally only use one model forum as well i just have other intrests that arnt covered here)

Thanks to all for your comments, I don’t think it’s my system, I’m paying for high speed DSL, and this is the only one that is a PITA to use. Scale Auto doesn’t seem to be loading as fast as before either. I don’t remember if the old system was faster or not but I do know that this site used to load a whole lot faster then it does now. I think it is the software they use. It is slower and locks up more than any other site I visit. After all the trouble it caused at SA I don’t know why they used it again here.

I’ve never been a fan of the switch, still hate and always will. But I like the crowd here, and I’m already on 3 other forums, so no need to “switch”.
I’ve noticed a slow load-time occasionally, but never takes my old rig here more than two or three seconds to load pages here on most days. That is, as long as the particular thread doesn’t have 20 or 30 pictures on it… And this thing is ten years old, running Windows 98…
More often than not, when I DO get a slow-down here, I just have to reboot my computer and the problem goes away…
Other times, it appears that they may be doing something on the forums at the head-end, and that causes it to slow to a crawl, but that usually happens at very late hours and not very often… The rest of the site works fine then, it’s just the forums are slow. Coming back a couple hurs later and it’s back to normal…
Try rebooting your computers when the forums won’t load fast… Especially if you’re like me and leave it turned on 24/7…
Or maybe it’s just the guys using “newer and better” computers… Muuhahahaaaa…
I visit several modeling sites, & by far this is the slowest of them all, so I post the least here. One caveat, I’m overseas for most of the years, so the internet isn’t anywhere near blazing fast over here. Curious to see what its like once I get home in a few days.

Using an old IMac Computer(1.6ghz??). Said that I got 2 Fiber optic connections coming in here(one for PC, one for game-stations).
I’m running XP SP3 on a Pentum III at 450 tweaked to an inch of it’s life, and no problems here. Of course, I have some things that help as much as if not more than processor speed itself. Most of you probably already know this but here goes anyways for those like me who had to rely on his son for a computer education[:$]:
1: I pay for the highest speed cable internet offered in my area. I steam movies to the X-box all the time. They buffer up and start playing in HD usually within 5 seconds.
2: I have a good video card. My mother board has an AGP slot, so I got a nice card to fill it. the advantage to an AGP card over a PCI card is the AGP doesn’t use the main processor for video info. It has it’s own processor and RAM, and if it runs short on RAM it can access main system RAM directly without having to go through the Pentium. I usually dont set my resolution higher than 1024 X 768 because my 47 year old eyes cant see the smaller words anymore on my ViewSonic 17" monitor.
And finally—
3: LOTS of RAM. RAM is the absolute cheapest boost you can give you computer’s performance, so Max it out with every meg it’ll accept. I have half a gig. I watch DVDs all the time on it with only a .3 second read ahead time.

Video card shouldn’t have much to do with internet display page display speed (Mines a 1GB Nvidia 9600 PCI-E, much faster than your AGP, so shouldnt be an issue with FSM right?)
RAM, yes RAM is good and helpful to a point after that point it doesnt do any more (though my wife can have so many IE explorer pages and Tabs open it almost maxs out her 4GB of RAM, I have 5GB for 3D rendering and have never used 1/2 that in internet browsing so again not an issue with my access to FSM)
The problem lies in the software the FSM uses in its forums, its slow probably because its bulky and not streamlined, it maybe choaking the bandwidth with to much data or it may not handle the data very well either way those with VERY high speed are at an advantage in speed. As it seems FSM are unwilling to do anything about it all we can do is wait till the next software change and see if that helps.

Photobuccket is the slowest thing I ever seen… Takes almost a minute to load a page there… Probably because of all the pictures, plus the video ads…
Here, I don’t have any problems, except if it’s a thread with a LOT of pics to load… Then it take 3 or 4 seconds… I ain;t runninga ny high-speed internet connection, just what my cable offers a the lowest rate…
If I have two or three windows open, it might slow down a little, but I don’t think it’s FSMs fault…
