Foreign Aircraft in US Service?

What are some foreign made or designed aircraft that equipped US units with US markings? (ie. was in service, not test, familiarization or “aggressor” aircraft)

A few that I can think of:

Spad

Spitfire

Beaufighter (just found out about this one)

B-57 / Canberra

Harrier

Any others?

I do believe we used the British Mosquito, too.

And, isn’t the Otter Canadian?

Mosquito, Horsa, Nieuport 17/28, SE-5, Sherpa…

Yes, the Otter, Beaver, and Caribou were Canadian made.

British Defiant was used as a target tug. Also BAC Hawk (T-45 Goshawk) and IAI Kfir (F-21 Lion)

The new C-27 transport could be considered a foreign aircraft as well in US service as well I believe.

Hmmm, how 'bout…

C-64 Noorduyn Norseman

Westland Lysander

de Havilland Buffalo

de Havilland E-9 Widget

Fokker C-31 Troopship

…and the list for WWI is very long!

Is that the new Airbus that beat out Boeing not long ago for the Air Force contract?

The C-27 is made by Alenia of Italy. They are in partnership with Lockheed-Martin to make the C-27 for the US. Alenia has ties with Boeing and Airbus though. I don’t know of it competing with a Boeing design but I could be wrong. There is also a gunship variant that is supposed to be in the testing stage known as the AC-27J Stinger II.

From what I understood the Air Force had accepted/choosed the Airbus over the Boeing but Congress had stopped the deal.

Ahhh, gotcha! I haven’t exactly been keeping abreast on the matter lately…[:I]

Hiya, Irish Fan! And [#welcome] to the forums!

DH4, Breguet 14, Salmson 2 A2

Yea, I bet. I really need to research WWI aircraft. The only aircraft I’m familiar with are the Spad, Sopwith Camel and the Folker Tri-wing, … and two thirds of that knowledge comes from Peanuts cartoons. [:I]

FOKker, mein Herr… Hard “O” as in “OTTER”…[;)]

Did we fly Cannadian built F86 Sabers??..Harv

Yea, see? I need some schoolin’ [:D]

I believe the US bought our CL 6 Sabres when we retired them, to use as target drones…

Several non American aircraft have found their way into the American military, I’ve put the US designation of the aircraft types in bold:

Aircraft from DeHavilland Canada seem to do pretty well getting sold to the American military:

DHC-2 Beaver (U-6), DHC-3 Otter (U -1), DHC-4 Caribou (C-7), DHC-5 Buffalo (C-8), DHC-6 Twin Otter (UV-18), Dash 7 (O-5), and Dash 8 (E-9) have all worn American uniforms.

There is also the British Shorts C-23 Sherpa in US Army service.

The US Coast Guard have the Italian Augusta A109 (H-68 Stingray) and French Aerospatiale Dauphin (H-65 Dolphin) helicopters in their inventory.

The USCG also has the Dassault Falcon 20 jet on inventory as the HU-25 Guardian.

The US Army recently started taking on the Eurocopter EC145 under the designation UH-72 Lakota.

The USAF Academy uses sailplanes of foreign design for training purposes; The Czech Let 13/23/33 series aircraft are collectively designated TG-10 while the German built Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus is designated TG-15.

There is also the C-38 Courier. While it was built by Gulfstream, it has its origins in the Israeli Aircraft Industries’ Astra SPX biz jet design.

Does the P-51 Mustang count?

It was built for the RAF, who modified it with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, prior to being put into front line service with the Army Air Corps…[%-)]
