For The Sopwith Camel Fans

I ran across this in TRADE-A-PLANE (First October Issue 2004, page 167) and thought it was interesting, especially the last line [:p]

Original Sopwith Camel F-1

Serial No. B6291, Built in 1917. Served in No. 10 Fighter Squadron on the Western Front. Carefully stored in England since WW-1 and professionally restored to flying status by British Aerospace Co., in the same factory where it was originally constructed.

The airframe and 110 hp LeRhone engine were carefully disassembled, documented, overhauled and test flown. Even the data plate is original, making this aeroplane unmatched in condition and historical importance.

This 87 year old aeroplane is the world’s only remaining Sopwith Camel built by Sopwith. Of the 7 other Camels in existence, none were built by Sopwith. Even the Army, Navy, and Smithsonian Museums have only replicas. The United States had 4 Camel squadrons on the Western Front in WW-1.

Priced at under one million.

Yup. I saw a Camel advertised as a bargain at 2.2 million. Rats. That’s more than I make in a whole year. :wink:

Man!!
What a piece of history! I’d love to see the thing up close.

A little bit to rich for my slender wallet. Would love to do a walk around though.

Regards, Rick

Yep, just a bit out of my price range as well. Actually a LOT out of my price range! I really would love to see it though. Truly a piece of history.

There’s a Camel at Kalamazoo…

Well here’s the next best thing;
