Thanks for posting the photo. There are more sides to this story. The pilot flying the fighter had been looping around it, but on the final loop he mid-aired insted. His name became a new word in the Russian language, a reckless or irresponsible act after this accident was then known as a Blaginism, for poor old Nikoloai Blagin. Probably not what his mother had in mind for him.
Another ANT-20 was built after the accident financed by donations from the proletariat.
Here is a bit of “Golden Age” trivia I hope you all will enjoy. The Winnie Mae, made famous by Wyley Post and to a later event by Will Rogers, is in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. One of the employees sent the following telegram; “Found Winnies pants stop am returning to Washington with same stop , signed ???” I do not remember who signed it but the telegram raised quite a stir at the time. Keep in mind the telegram would have been delivered to a female secretary. The topic was The wheel pants of the Winnie Mae. They were needed to complete the restoration as she sits today.
