folded wings

I just bought the tamiya corsiar with moto/tug(the F4U-1D)…just wondering,is making the wings in the bent position difficult to do?re there any parts of the kit that are difficult? Also one more Question,I bought a bottle of Model Master:Navy Blue Grey, did any of the corsairs have this color on them?

The Tamiya kit is actually designed to be built with the wings folded (atleast it seems that way to me). It’s alot easier to build it with the wings folded because it can be difficult to line up the wings in the “down” position.

Apart from that, there aren’t any real problem areas on the Tamiya kit. There are some fuselage inserts that go behind the cockpit opening that can be a bit hard to align properly, but if you’re careful, they’ll be fine. It really is a great kit to build.

As for the camo question, I’m pretty sure that by the time the Corsairs were being delivered (especially the 1D’s), the standard camo had changed to either the tri-colour scheme (Flat sea-blue over intermediate blue and insignia white) and later the overall gloss sea blue scheme. There were some early corsairs painted in the blue-grey scheme, but they were all birdcage (F4U-1’s) corsairs.

Yeah. I just put the left wing in the down position on my F4U-1A and while the top seem looks good, the bottom has a gap. The Right wing is going up!

Well, I was going to put the wings folded, but my question was is it difficult to do?

No, it isn’t difficult to do.

Nick, I also have the kit. Bought it at Hobby Lobby’s 50% off sale… As I was looking at the bird, it seems to me that it would be very easy to do. The wings are molded into seperate pieces, so all you have to do is make em fold. Good luck, tell me how the kit comes together!

The kit is coming together fine!Going to paint it tomorrow!

I would not attached the wings in a folded position until done, the it can break easily, at least mine did

The kit is designed for the wings to be in either position, but it’s easier to show them folded. Just follow the instruction sheet & all will go well. The Blue Grey was not used on the D models. The majority were Gloss Sea Blue although some were in the tri-color scheme.

Regards, Rick

Thanks for the comments guys!

Ive searched and cant find any gloss sea blue piant, does anyone make it?

I intend to use MM Insignia Blue, USN Blue Gray, and Dark Blue Acrylics. I think that with some weathering and maybe some toning down they will look just fine for the tri-color scheme. I can’t imagine that a gloss paint job would have lasted long in the Pacific Theater.[2c]

Testors MM 1717 dark sea blue FS15042. The 1 in the FS # means its gloss.
