I’ve been getting my program up and running again and juggling student schedules all week. Just got back to the D-VI this weekend. Before beginning some of the prep work to begin applying the lozenge camo I made sure that the conversion was matching the three-views properly and went ahead and sprayed the non-lozenge colors because I felt it would be difficult at best to mask over the lozenge decals. Here are the results.
Nice to see a WWI aircraft. I have always been a WWII buff but am finding myself more and more intrigued about WWI. I give credit for that to the wonderful series "“The First World War” based on Hew Strachen’s book which then led me to “Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour” (forgive me if the title is wrong, I’m struggling to remember the order), and then “Paris 1919”. I’ve always understood that WWII was really the continuation of the worldwide conflict begun in 1913, but the machinery of the '39-'45 era was just so aesthetically appealing. I’m making my first foray into WWI aircraft and using photoetch with Academy’s 1/32 Sopwith Camel F1 and an upgrade set. (I bartered for some help given to a friend, being on disability I’m deathly afraid of “on the side cash”)
Anyhow, good luck with the project and I’ll keeping an eager eye out for the updates.
You can find some of the earlier build in a prior thread. Do a search on Fokker D-VI and you’ll find it. You can also see my last three WWI builds from prior months Albatros D-V, Moraine Saulnier N-1 and Nieuport N-17 all in separate threads and all in 1/48 scale. Good luck with your 1/32 project
I’ve been able to get some more finishing done today. It’s been slow going cutting the decals segments to match the new wing shapes. These pics are taken while some of the Solvaset is still wet. I trim the edges after the main surfaces have set and then add one more dose of Solvaset. I still have the forward fuselage to cover and then I’ll start doing a little final assembly, especially the engines and machine guns before tying it all together.
Nice work so far. Interior looks great. Those losenge decals look like a pain in the patooty with those large areas of irregular surfaces. How’d they come out after drying ?
Nice stuff so far Dcapone, Those lozenge decals can be a right royal PITA. I remember from my DVII. They are quite delicate and getting them to seat nicely around the trailing edge was a pain as well. Kudos for taking on such a great project though.
The decals set down quite nicely. My biggest problem with them so far is that they tend to release from the carrier sheet and curl up on themselves. You have to watch them in the water every second and pull them just before they are going to release. I’ve been soaking them for 30 seconds and then pulling out and sitting them on the bench until they are ready to place on the model. The pre-cut shapes are perfect for the D-VII wing but of course don’t match up well to the D-VI wing because of the shortened span. I’ve been working from the center and cutting the outer panels as I go. It seems to be working.
Thanks for the encouragement. The last of the lozenge decals are currently drying while I work on the engine and machine guns. I’ll try and post a few new pictures shortly.
