Fletcher Measure 12 Modified Clarification Please

O.K. I need to get the following clear in my mind. This is for the Tamiya 1/350th Fletcher kit.

Can someone confirm the following:

MEASURE 12

Vertical surfaces from boot-topping to level of main deck or highest sheer line, continuous for full length, Sea Blue 5-S.

Vertical surfaces above main deck level to level of the top of the highest superstructure masses, Ocean Gray 5-O.

Pole masts, yards, slender upper works above level of top superstructure masses, Haze Gray 5-H.

Horizontal surfaces, Wood Decks, and Canvas covers visible from outside the vessel, Deck Blue, 20-B.

MEASURE 12 Modified

Vertical surfaces from boot-topping to level of main deck or highest sheer line, continuous for full length, Sea Blue 5-S.

Splotches, Haze Gray 5-H.

Vertical surfaces above main deck level to level of the top of the highest superstructure masses, Ocean Gray 5-O.

Splotches, Sea Blue 5-S.

Pole masts, yards, slender upper works above level of top superstructure masses, Haze Gray 5-H.

Splotches, Sea Blue, 5-S.

Horizontal surfaces, Wood Decks, and Canvas Covers visible from outside the vessel, Deck Blue, 20-B.

I arrived at this after reading Ships-2 and deducing that MEASURE 12 Modified is the same as MEASURE 12 with the added Splotches (the color of which is based on the instructions in Ships-2).

Correct?

Also, the lower hull would be painted Norfolk 65 Anti-fouling Red, and the Boot Topping painted Black.

Correct?

Thanks in advance,

James [:)]

Never mind. Have to do more research. I am told that it should be Measure 12R not Measure 12 Modified. I was also told that Ships-2 was the proper place to look but that does not seem to be the case. Ships-2 doesn’t even list 12R. Anyway, back to the drawing board. LOL!

James, Jeff_Herne is the person to ask about the Fletcher class camo paint. He wrote a book on the class.

Measure 12 Modified is the same thing as Measure 12 Revised. The USN called it Measure 12 Modified, Royal Navy Historian Alan Raven calls it Measure 12 Revised.

Here’s the simple method of application.

Paint the hull overall 5-O Ocean Gray. Apply 5-N Navy Blue Splotches over the 5-O.

Paint the upperworks 5-H Haze Gray. Paint 5-O Splotches over the 5-H.

Decks were 20-B Deck Blue.

My research indicates that Fletchers DID NOT wear 5-S Sea Blue, since they came online after the Pacific Fleet had received orders to replace 5-S with 5-N. That order actually came in written form on December 16th, 1941, with Navy Tech order 21CN-41.

Here’s a drawing of LaVallette’s Ms12Mod pattern just to clarify:

WOW! Thank You very much. Fantastic!

What book is that from?

So, do I forget about Horizontal painting instructions and just paint only the decks 20-B?

Also, I am correct that the lower hull would be painted Norfolk 65 Anti-fouling Red, and the Boot Topping painted Black?

Thanks,

James, the drawing is from my book, Warship Perspectives: Fletcher, Gearing and Sumner Class Destroyers in WW2. It’s available from WR Press, and my publisher is none other than the same noted naval historian Alan Raven.
It’s available from White Ensign, Pacific Front, Floating Drydock, etc. etc.

All horizontal surfaces were 20-B deck Blue. Lower hull is Norfolk 65, and Black is the boot topping color.

Check your email as well…
