Flat coat spoiling pastel weathering on AFV

I tried doing some weathering on a Tamiya 1:35 Bradley AFV last night. Over my last coat of Tester Dullcote I applied some fine brown pastel chalk powder over the surfaces with a short stiff brush. Once I was satisfied with the coverage I sealed with another coat of the Tester Dullcote.

The Dullcote is now dry and has a flat surface, however, all the powder now has a darker “wet” look to it. This seems to have reduced the weathered effect by about 80%. Whereas before you could see the effect all over, now its only mildly noticable in the wheels and the side panels where I applied the most. It has also lost that dry, dusty look that made it look really finished.

Should I have not sealed it at all, or is there an alternate way of preserving the effect?

When you spray anything on that pastel stuff you will loose what you have built up. I found this out the hard way after obtaining a perfect exhaust staining on an F4U that took forever. Sprayed it there it went[:|]

Yup,what he said.I got the same results with Tamiya weathering kits.I don’t seal them now.

Thanks for the replies. I really enjoyed the look of it with the pastels, so I’ll probably re-apply and just be careful handling it.
