This is my first go around with a ship, the 1/350 SMS Emden. Used the GMM etch set. Not a bad little kit to start out on though I’ve heard there are accuracy issues. That didn’t bother me as I just wanted to try my hand at doing a ship model.
An attractive looking model John, nicely completed.
I think the shrouds and ratlines to the aft mast may have looked better if separately rigged with line rather than the pre -formed provided version, and perhaps the rigging line is a tad to heavy, but in my opinion a fine effort all the same, particularly as this is a first venture into ship modelling.
It’s a really nice job,I just love the Emden and the saga of her and her crew,I just wish someone made some replacements for the guns,or that DML,Hasegawa,Trumpeter would bring the kit up to todays standards, but again you did the old kit a great honor by your job.
Bill, thank you very much! Main things I heard about accuracy issues involved the bridge area. Supposedly the shape is wrong.
GeorgeW, thank you very much! The shrouds and ratlines were from the GMM set. I rigged it with paintbrush bristles for the short runs and .005 nylon thread for the longer ones. I tried to get as small of a diameter thread as I could as I didn’t want to use the kit supplied rigging because it was way over scale.
Surface line, thank you very much! Indeed she was a graceful ship as were most of those in her era.
Anthony, thank you very much! She certainly had some history about her. It sure would be good to have someone come out with a more up to date kit, especially improvements to the guns.
TD4438, thank you very much! Maybe you should give a ship a try. I was kind of leery about trying one with my limited skills but what the heck. Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say!
Very nice work! [tup] This was also the first 1/350 ship I built using PE railings + details.
Regarding the PE ratlines, my personal opinion is that they look more than good enough in this scale at normal viewing distances, and certainly look much better than anything that would be achievable than all but the most skilled modellers using thread or stretched sprue. In larger scales like 1/200 and 1/144 it’s a different matter, hand-rigged shrouds/ratlines look much better and aren’t too hard to make.
HEY !!! You are going to be awesome if you keep up like that . VERY NICE JOB ,INDEED!!! I recently took mine to the hs in AUSTIN for display . I didn,t have the right P.E. (I didn,t know anyone made a set ) so I used what I had laying around . They went nuts over it . they all asked how I put the P.E. on . I was surprised at the question . The reason seems to be they saw no glue marks where I installed the P.E. . Well done, as I said and it,s a pleasure to see first time builds this good . tankerbuilder
