Hey tiger king, need your help, and any other Tiger excepert.
Yeah its T-rex again and I’m presently working on a academy 1/35 Tiger 1 early version for my czech diorama, the instruction says that the paint jobs should be desert camofloge, but for the “forgotten cities” scene souldn’t be that paint job, but I don’t know what? I was thinking of covering it with olive green but is there such style exsits on a tiger 1, and did this design was in the streets of czech cities. I painted the body piece olive green with spray paint (practic for airbrush will I will be getting soon at my 16th birthday this march 18). The result is much better than brush painting, its thine so if I want I could paint it over with panzer gray or another colour.
I’ve sens picture of the model in progress, barley started but the the pictures are better than other.
Refer to this page for colour information. Depending on the timeframe of your model, the base colour should be either “Panzer Grey” or (after Feb 1943) “Dark Yellow”.
One other thing to consider: by the time of German armor operations in Czechoslavkia, it was well into 1945 – I don’t know if any Tiger Is would have even been deployed there –
No its not entierly olive green, so far only the body part is olive green, the rest is I belive dark yellow, then I guest i’ll go with panzer gray, but I don’t know what that coulor is?
Body before paint
In cardboad paint booth.
Can I paint it over?
And I thought the german came at Czech in 1939 after poland, oops maybe it will still go together. And how do you stop air bubble from forming on the spraypaint pieces your painting?
The Czech annexation of 1938 came without much armor rolling in – certainly not heavy units with Tiger Is (since they weren’t fielded until 08/42). Someone can check but the units with Tiger Is are well documented – along with their areas of operation. IF any got to fighting in Czechoslovakia, then it would have been in 1945, a time where MBTs were painted in dark yellow with red-brown and olive green camouflage.
Honestly, though – I think a Tiger I in Czech is historically problematic. Go somewhere onto the Russian steppes of '43 or '44 – those were the main areas where the Tiger Is operated.
The problem you’re having with your spray is most likely due to too much paint being applied. You should fill a container with hot tap water and let your spray can sit in it for about 2 minutes. The warmed (don’t boil the thing – it’ll explode) can will yield a finer and more consistent mist.
You should go over the model with several light coats from a distance of 8-12 inches away from the surface of the model. Each spray should be with a passing motion. The passing motion will give you a more even application. Start the spray to the left o the model and keep spraying until you pass the model. Not aim and shoot. These will lessen the possibility of runs and bubbles.
If you want to remove paint, get some rubber kitchen gloves and some EZOff Oven Cleaner. Follow the hazard warnings on the can – the EZ Off will remove your paint for you. Rinse it clean and use an old toothbrush to get the crevices. If the olive green coat isn’t too heavy, then you can just shoot over it.
T26E4 is right. There were no Tiger units in Czechoslovakia, the closets thing would be s.Pz.Abt 503 which was deployed to Hungary, and s.Pz.Abt 509 also see some action in that area but never in Czechoslovakia.
The closets SS units would be “Totenkopf” and s.SS.Pz.Abt 102 which is involved in some action around Weiner Neustadt, St. Polten, Steyr, Linz area … still a long way away from Czechoslovakia.
Then there is Panzer Division “Herman Goring” which fights around Oppeln, Neisse in Poland and the retreats to Dresden around the end of April 1945.
But no Tigers in Czechoslovakia.
There were ofcourse rail transports across from the eastern front to the western front and vice versa, some of them may have gone through Czechoslovakia, but is highly unlikely that any of them were ever unloaded in Czechoslovakia.
You seem to be covered here. Remember, yellow after Feb. 1943 and grey before it. You could do a Kursk version with the yellow base and green swatches of camo.
Sounds like you need to slow down a little, do some basic research, and then proceed. If you are interested in isolating a moment in time with a Tiger 1 dio, the information is out there in print and on the web. Just read up.
Yeah, I should take my time, already I thing I ruine it, althought from the March issue of FSM was how to make a panzer (which resembel of a tiger). I was looking for a panzer for my Czech bouilding for a diorama but I didn’t know a vehicule or a tank that was in czecoslovacia (don’t know how to say or spell it, just say czech). I knew that the nazis conquered czech, so I thought that tiger was a common german tank in WW2, but since it never was in czech, well I don’t know what to put in, or what to do with the tank.
For now i’m still working on the T-72 and the Tiger will be probaly painted dark yellow or panzer gray. There some good news, the M113A1 got painted and looks way better, i’ll send the pictures of it in its forum, i’ll also post the images of the tiger (don’t worry the pictures are better).
Meanwhile I will soon get the airbrush and try it on the tiger, any more advise of the tiger or what tank to put in the Czech diorama will be very useful, thanks.
Hey ya, there’s some russian declas with the building, it could happen in Leningrad or Stalingrad (those name sound very famillier). I saw a Image of a heavy artillery canon shooting at leningrad in 1941, and my Tiger 1 has a suit that fits in Leneigrad. Stalingrad is a good idea too, with images of the movie ENEMY AT THE GATE (beileve 2005) wihich is happening at Stalingrad 1941, I could also add a T-34 in the scene.
I also found a suitibale Image of a early tiger near russian in my awsomre book “LIFE’S PICTURE OF WORLD WAR 2” which some german infantry (3 I believe maybe four). If I pick to be base on this photo is won’t have a Panzer gray coulor (since the scene seems more field/ praires or woodlans rader than city.
I’ll seen image of the tiger and the scene soon, anyone who are looking for images of my book please feel free to ask, I’ll try finding it.
Sounds like you’re having fun imagining your final scene – that’s cool!
You might want to check on your dates however – Tiger Is first appeared at the siege of Leningrad but it was August '42. The unit was sPzAbt 502 (the subject of DML’s Initial Tiger I kit).
Stalingrad was reached in '42 with the final surrender at the end of January '43. No Tigers operated there however.
Float any ideas out here and guys will help you out. Take care, RC
Hey great news![:D] The Tiger is going much better, after repainting the hull with my new airbrush and tamiya acrylic paint, some peices didn’t got entierly painted when I already rand out of paint (needed alot to remove the darker coat of paint, the olive green) It doesn’t look entierly dark yellow, more like desert but the final paint design will be russian 1944, but the final diorama will not be czech or russian, the tiger will be based on a image of my book.
One of the gear wheel (the wheel that moves the tank tracks with the teeths) has a very realistic appears of dirty, perfect for the scene (don’t know how I did it, complete accident). I really need to get a picture of it! but my pictures won’t get downloaded to photobucket[:(!].
(from last forum, notice the realistique dirt wheel on left)
By the way, are all the wheels of the tiger rims painted flat black, and is it better to paint them after behind instal or seperately?
In 1942 a Tiger 1 would cost 250,000 Reichsmarks(thats about 100,000$ US) while a PzKpfw III would cost only RM 96,200.
Today a custom or order made Tiger 1 would cost over a million dollar US, but the tiger time is over and much better tank like the M1A1 Abram would cost 4,300,000 $ US owch!
Doing good so far, most of the wheels are install but I think I should have install them after assembly and painting, needs another coat of desert yellow for the finishing touch.
I can’t get a image of the fiqures but there all three crew member of the tank and one soldier, the only big problem so far is knowing if my tiger is a later or early type in the photo I’m coping, well not exacly coping more like getting a idea, cause I think that that tiger in the image is a taget practise for germany anti-tank weapons, no way is my tiger behing a shooting duck!
As the tiger comes to near completion I use my Badger 350 to do a coat of dark yellow to finish it of (hint to everyone, desert yelow is not the same as dark yellow) now I’ve applie stripes of red brown and forest green (mix of 50% olive green and 50% light green) the camo looks fantastic, I’m really proud of myself, although I mit have made the stipes too width.
Camofloge is done and I spray the tip of the barrel black to ressembel a fire shot, some of you probaly add this to you tank barrel, I spayed a layer of paint thinner to finish the job, this is not to remove the paint, simply give the tank a glose effect to make it look better but not clean since later it will be in a dio. Next step is decal then assesoiries, finally weather, I’m not full sure if i’m going to do bullets holes on the tiger, but so far so good.
Now what can I applie that will make the tank a more older and use look? Come on answer my question I already ask three with no answer!
I think if you post some pictures with your comments, you will get more response. It is hard to comment on words, especially since your English is not that good.
Alrigth, sorry, just the camo is driving me mad, to hear the stats report on the tiger now, go to “camofloge” forum in armor. I’ll get the pictures ASAP!
If I can get the tiger done in three days I can submit it to the western cacada model show, I’ll also submit my M113A1. The tiger will have ipressive camo on its wheel and if I can do the camo then he’ll be ready. Wish me luck.
