First of the twins is done

As many of you may recall I have been working on a comparative build of the 1/48 Trumpeter and Classic Airframes SM-79 Italian torpedo bombers. Today the Trumpeter kit is complete …

The Classic Airframes kit has been primed and preshaded and will start getting some color this weekend. Where the Trumpeter kit was done in classic Italain markings the Classic Airframes kit will be done in classic Condor Legion markings. Once these are out of the way I’ll be starting something unusual with an old ERTL A-20, stay tuned for more bizarre stuff from Swanny’s Models.

Swanny, the Trumpeter kit came out nice. I really like the mottling…but from your earllier “teasers” showing the interiors of both kits, bring on the Classic Airframes pictures!

BTW, how was the fit of the exterior pieces on the Trumpeter kit?

Awesome looking build, Swanny. How in the world dod you do that camo? What a great look.

Swanny,

That is, without a doubt, the wildest camo scheme I have ever seen! I love it! The build turned out beautifully, as your builds always do, but this is one of the most eye-catching! The diorama work is excellent also. Thanks for sharing!

Mucker, the fit of the parts was actually pretty good and very little putty was needed. The worst thing on this kit was overall lack of interior detail and inadaquate decals – I stole some from the CA kit and some from Alpha Flight to mark this bird.

Jon, we are talking hand painted here and to make it even more frieghtening is that I did it once then did not like the looks and repainted the hole thing. Each time was a full day bent over this with magnifying glasses – oh my aching back!

Brian - thanks, I like to do different stuff, the road less traveled don’t ya know.

One footnote on the look of the aircraft, when these things were parked the canvas covering the ribs showed little to no frame definition, the ribs were only visible when the thing was in flight so both companies got the look wrong as both are modeled on the ground.

Superb, Swanny! Absolutely an amazing build, that paint job is terrific. It was BRUSH-painted?? Just curious…what led to that decision? Was it a case of not wanting to mask, or free-handing with an airbrush? How were the 1:1 scale ones painted wayyyy back when?

Looks great, Matt! Can’t wait to see the twin finished.

Mark

in that case wouldn’t sanding down the ribs a little to tone them down a bit be in order?

Exactly

Top notch as usual Matt. The hand paint is very effective.

Andy

Beautiful job on the build.

Today while the wife cruises all the garage sales in town I am preparing masks for the Spanish SM.79, so far I have cut out 140 individual masks for the camo pattern and still working on it.

So what led to your decision to hand paint the first one? That is one fantastic looking paint job, Mr. Swan.

Just trying different techinques to see what I like.

Very nice Matt. Another beauty.

BTW… have you been on MaxAir yet? I am in your neck of the woods and was at Cedar Point Sunday. I liked that better than the coasters. That is one sick ride!

Wingnut, I am way too old for that stuff. Heart and back just say no.

NAH Never to old. I am gonna be 51 in about 5 weeks and I had a blast. Ok… so it is 48 hours later and i am just getting the feeling back in my feet[;)]… but I had a blast.
