first helo in 1/72 ?

calling all rotorheads ! my little brother has decided he likes helicopters and wants me to build one for him. can anyone suggest a good modern copter kit ( cobra or hind, maybe ) that isn’t too expensive or too hard to build ? it’ll be my first helo…
thx in advance,
frosty[:)]

Pick up a copy of either the Hasegawa Mi-24 Hind or AH-1F Cobra; both of these kits, in all their variations are top-quality models. Great detail, fit, and ease of building.

Neat little kit that may appeal to your younger brother is the RAH-66 Comanche helicopter. Since it is a prototype, the accuracy isn’t too much an issue. Also this helicopter made a neat appearance in the Hulk movie taking shots at the big green guy. Farily cheap kit and looks futuristic.

thanx guys ! i really like the hasegawa M-1E1 i’m currently working on, so i"ll look for the hind and/or cobra at my local hobby shop…
Rob G.: who makes the comanche kit ?
thx again,
frosty[:)]

The RAH-66 Comanche kit is by Italeri. Very good kit, nice details, easy construction. Rob is right, for a FIRST kit, the Comanche is near ideal.

Cheers!
Tony

thanx for the advice, rotorheadTX and Major G.!
i’ll look for the comanche kit next time i’m at the hobby shop !

If you’re looking for cheap and easy, i would suggest a Hughes 500 or MD500 by Hasagawa.

This was one of my first helo kits many, many years ago and it was a great looking piece when finished.

2 Burnin’ - 6 Turnin’
Ramps Up - Ready In The Rear

thx for the reply, hooker… i’m not having much luck finding any of these kits yet, so in the meantime i have a snaptite apache in the works. and i’ll keep looking…

ps: i actually found a Hughes 500 kit, but it’s an Academy 1/48 scale one. it was about $10, so i bought it…
and thanks to everyone who answered !

You might want to take a look for Academy’s 1/72 AH-64 Apache.

I’ve got it on the go right now and its my first helicopter in quite some time, its got decent fit and good parts breakdown, the instructions are crystal clear and the price is good (I paid $12.00 Canadian for mine)

The only drawbacks I can see are that if you aren’t intrested in the Israeli variant which is the only one on the decal sheet, then you’ll have to find some aftermarket decals. Secondly, it comes with the above rotor radome seen on the “longbow” version, but the avionics sponsons in the kit are molder symetrical as opposed to the asymetrical arangement on the actual “longbow” Apache. Fortunately there is also the standard mast antenna so you can make earlier versions accurately.

Whatever you do, steer well clear of Airfix’s 1/72 Naval Lynx, its a reissue of an older kit with an update sprue for current versions. The update parts dont match up to the old parts well at all and you’ll just be disapointed totally by it.

Howdy Frosty!

just curious…why the name Frostygirl?

Have fun building!

Papa-Echo:
like indiana jones, i took my nickname from the family dog. [:D]we’ve got a jack russell terrier named frost… and i like her name better than mine.
now i know i’m really in for it…[B)]
hope ur not too disappointed…
frosty[:)]

Not at all…thats pretty darn cool![:D]

No kidding Frosty!

When I think about all the people and dogs I know, theres a lot more dogs than people I’d rather share a name with!

Major G.
As of this week, i guess the RAH-66 is no longer a prototype !
The Sikorsky plant has started production on the Comanche… i saw a pic of CT. Governor John Rowland at the controls of the simulator with a techie giving him the 411; guess they don’t trust him with the real thing… “now, don’t touch THAT button ! oops, u just blew up the plant !”
Still no luck finding the kit, though.[:(]

Papa-Echo and Upnorth:
thanx for the kind words.
“the more i learn about people, the more i love my dog!”

But the kit is still based off of the non-flying prototype. That’s why accuracy isn’t much of an issue when building the kit. It is a neat looking helicopter though. I picked up a couple of the 1/72 scale ones when they first came out. I also have one of the 1/48 scale ones to go with my 1/48 Testors Stingbat stealth helicopter.

Hey Frostygirl, try www.greatmodels.com they may have it. BTW, you should activate your email link!

Guday frostygirl
I’m just starting my first helio, an Ericson Skycrane Georgia Peach/Incredible Hulk. I have photos of the Peach but the kit is the Hulk. So I suppose that it will have to be the Hulk.
I wouldn’t mind being named after our old dog but I’m not keen on Aligator Dessolation.
No I didn’t name him. His original owner was a fan of the Australian auther and poet Henry Lawson and so named him after a dog in one of his stories. He was also about to shoot him so I took him home.
Dai

guday, dai !
(and major g. and everyone else too !)
little bro’ was delighted with his snap-tite apache and would u believe both rotors are still firmly attached to the model after almost a full week ! [:D]
alligator desolation, eh ? i’ll be he’s glad he met u, considering what was about to happen to him !
