Hi guys,
A while ago i was working on some Tamiya figures for a Normandy dio.
They were the first figures i’d seriously painted since my teens,so i know i still have along way to go with eye details and blending etc.I thought i’d add some Hornet heads instead of using the Tamiya ones as i didn’t like the look of them.Unfortunately i didn’t do enough research,had the Hornet heads near completition and was told by a few people that the they were actually for paratroopers…not the infantry.
Anyways,i started a few days ago trying to knock these out of the way,but using the original heads from Tamiya.I have used Vallejo acrylic paint for the figues.

Still have to add decals for the insignia,paint their boots and give the kit bags some more definition,chip marks on the coffee mugs and general highlights etc.

Not bad for a start. As you suggested, your eyes could use some narrowing. I like what you did with camo netting on the helmets. Is white the right color for the cups? That looks very eye catching. If it is, the Tommies weren’t thinking too clearly when issuing them and carrying them on the outside of their packs.
About the coffee cups,after some deliberation i ended up sticking with white.
I did some research on them via the net and recieved advice from members on other forums.Some of the cups were issued in white with blue rims,some infantry chose to paint them in green or even red.I have seen on some photos that some tended to put a distinctive marking on the underside so there was no confusion over who’s mug was who’s.Some painted a dot,others a cross…I do agree though that having a white cup or even a coloured cross outside on their bags was probably an easy target for the enemy.
Generally they were attached by means of sliding the bag straps throught the cups handle.Due to wear and tear i guess the handles would break off the cups and end up inside their field bags.
The netting on the helmets was needed as the Tamiya helmets weren’t too great.All i did was find an old gauze badge out of the medicine bag and glued a section to the helmets.There after a dry brush and added foliage which will be seen on my dio.
Wow kiddo, if this your first crack at 35th figs, I can’t wait to see when you start converting poses[:P] Very nice, clearly no 2" tall guy is going to scare the likes of you. Keep it up.

@RonUSMC…i’ve added some chip marks and given the mugs a lite wash so they don’t look so stark.
@Rabbiteatsnake…one thing i like less about this hobby is painting figures,i’ve got a few projects lined up so i’ll be doing some practice on some spares first to overcome this hurdle.
Not bad at all being a first attempt (you sure it is a first attempt).
Everything has been said: uniforms and helmets look great, cups are too white and eyes are a little too big.
I’m confident you’ll improve those flwas as you grow in experience.
They look great for your first attempt, i would say when you start detailing the packs and ammo pouches give them a hint of green, then drybrush with the color you used to paint them with first or use khaki drill which is a good color match for british infantry webbing.
i aways use white with a touch of blue to start the eyes, then paint the centres to correspond with the corners of the mouth if looking directly ahead, just paint and define the upper and lower lids over the eyeball. then alittle bit of varnish to make then shine.
