Thanks to those of you who suggested ideas for my first 1/48 project. I’ve decided to build the PBY. As several of you suggested I am going to build the RAF version from 209 Squadron, AH545, WQ-Z which sighted the Bizmarck on May 26, 1941. Cool ha ? [8D] Anything I need to know about 1/48 scale before getting into it ?? Thanks ! Steve
Excellent. You will of course keep us posted with pictures and all that, right?
…Ummm, it’s more accurate than the one at 1/72 scale?
Great!

Wish you the best of luck!
I guess that we all eagerly
wait for the first photos.

Great choice-- I did that aircraft in 1/72 scale, using the Academy kit.
(My write up is on Modeling Madness.)

Someone should do “Strawberry 5” or one of the ones from the Midway operation that spotted the incoming Japanese Fleet in early June of 1942. Would the battle have gone differently if they hadn’t who knows . Thank God will never find out.
Good choice! I think the PBY is a fun plane to build! Just watch out for the wing span, okay? a PBY’s wingspan is only a bit shorter than a B-17’s (so make sure you know where it’s going on display when you’re done with it)! What references are you going to use for the RAF version? [:D] Keep us posted, okay?
Do you have any links to pictures? I found a couple of black and white closeups with crews. When I do a search for Strawberry 5, I get Condoms and things. [:o]
IF you look at PBY Catalina in Action they have color profiles of both aircraft. Well, for sure The RAF CAT. If you need me to snail mail you a copy of the profile, I will. My computer crapped out, so I’m using a public comp. NOT GOOD!

Beyond the laughs, it looks like those historic planes were Black Cats; the same thing I originally bought. Here is one picture of a 1/48 scale model http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Gal2/1301-1400/Gal1364_PBY_Willis/04.jpg
It looks kind of ragged. Even not knowing the history, I suspect those first historic planes were in better condition.
Should be fun. I built mine last year. Not weathered or battered like the one above this is what it can look like following box suggestions. As well as a top view for scale.
I am almost finished my RCAF 1/48 Catalina which has similar camouflage to the RAF. I just punched in RCAF Catalina in the search engine and came up with many hits. I built the Airfix 1/72 scale some thirty years ago. I find the 1/48 much more enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing some pictures. Good luck.
