Finishing masters before creating RTV silicone mold

Greetings,

I’m getting ready to create a mold with RTV silicone and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about painting the master prior to pouring the mold. My thought was that paint would create a better finish for creating the mold and result in improved castings. Are there any paints that work or don’t work with this material? Should I stay away from paint? [%-)]

Thanks!

Dave

The RTV will pick up any details on the master, whether intended or not. I’m not sure what benefit a coat of paint, simply as a coat of paint might impart to a master. It may soften or hide details which yoy worked hard to add.

I’ve painted some masters with primer to help identify surface flaws that must be repaired before committing the master to RTV.

If your intended surface is supposed to be smooth - go over it with some x-fine sand paper and polish it well. I’ve done that with some ship hulls which I’ve mastered

Agree with EdGrune. There is no need to paint the master before molding. The RVT will copy any and all minor details itself. The painting could also leave brush marks or other imperfections that could be transferred to the RTV as well.

Very good. Thanks for the advise gents!
