Finished Photos of Trumpeter’s 1/24 Scale MKI Hawker Hurricane (Battle of Britain)

Fellow Modelers,

Below are photos of Trumpeter’s 1/24 scale Hawker MKI Hurricane British WW2 Fighter built in 2020. This is an excellent kit and was built straight from the box.

In the latter stages of the Battle of Britain (BoB) battle the RAF became critically short on pilots, prompting the formation and activation of multiple “foreign” units into frontline service. One these units was No. 303 Squadron piloted by Polish airmen. The unit was activated on August 31, 1940 and ended up being one of the most successful BoB squadrons used by Fighter Command. One of the MKI Hurricanes assigned to No. 303 Squadron was S/N V6684 (side code RF+F) which is the one I modeled. This aircraft was flown by multiple pilots in the squadron and is credited with following air victories:

(2) Dornier Do 17Zs-September 15th
(2) Bf-109s-September 26th
(1) He-111-September 27th
(1) Ju 88-September 27th
(1) Bf-110-October 10th
After finishing a long and distinguished career in Fighter Command, it was used as a training aircraft by No. 56 OTU. In August 1942, V6684 was damaged in a forced landing west of Arbroath, Scotland and written off. I recently read a couple of books about the BoB that made me more appreciative of the Hawker Hurricane’s contribution in that conflict. Frequently passed over in praise given to its younger, prettier and better performing cousin-the Supermarine Spitfire, the Hurricane should be remembered as an aircraft that was at the right place at the right time. Its simple construction, ability to absorb significant damage and ability to be quickly repaired made it one of the main reasons the RAF was able to defeat the Luftwaffe. Hurricane squadrons outnumbered Spitfire squadrons three to one when the battle began, and are credited with more kills when the battle officially ended in October 1940. I hope you enjoy the photos!

Great work! I always liked the Hurricane. It was the first WWII fighter that I built back in the day. I guess I like an underdog (vs. the Spitfire). It served admirably and was one of the hero aircraft of the war. Thanks for posting.

First off, your build turned out in a very good way with good attention given to the camouflage and interior detailing.
Secondly, I’ve built one 1/24 scale aircraft and that was a Trumpeter Bf109G-14ish variant and thought that it was a pretty large aircraft model till I saw your hand holding the wing in the photos above. That …is a pretty fair sized model Phillip.
Beautiful work and thank you for the quick history lesson on this aircraft.

Tojo72-Thank you!

mustang1989-Thanks for the kind words! Yes, 1/24 scale is huge even for single seated fighters!

Very good matt finish, also cockpit details, the instrument panel dials are realistic!

Fantastic build! Really impressed with the paint job, and light weathering. Wish Trumpeter would come out with more kits in this scale. Thanks for sharing

Beautiful looking Hurricane it really stands out.
Wish I had the room for 1/24 scale model planes.
I’d have to go old school and hang them from the ceiling

Cloudboy/Cbowling/Karljeff72-Thanks for the great compliments and comments! They are appreciated! One thing I do not like about the large Trumpeter kits are the thousands of rivets represented by dimpled holes, as most decals will not recess uniformly into the holes. On this model I was able to overcome this by using a Montex vinyl masking set and airbrushing the upper and lower wing insignias.

You could of used 1/24 rivet decals but that would of been a very long process
