Finished Photos of Monogram’s 1/48 Scale Fictional Space Cargo Hauler in Modern NASA Markings

Fellow Modelers.

Below are photos of Monogram’s 1/48 scale fictional Space Cargo Hauler spaceship I built in 1997. This model was originally issued in 1959 and designed by German missile developer W. Ley. I first built this when I was a very young boy and always thought it was a cool kit. On this attempt I decided to use modern NASA markings from my spares box. A few minor scratch-built and photo-etched parts were also added. The last photos show the unassembled kit parts and instructions from the 1969 re-issue. I hope you enjoy the photos.

That’s awesome. I do have to say that in looking at the astronauts, they look like a cross between a Medieval knight and the Michellin Man. But for a mold dating to the 50s, I don’t guess they would have known what an astronaut would truly look like.

That’s simply fascinating. Great build of an odd kit!

I wonder what they figure the astronaut in the “cage” section is doing. Do they need protection from space sharks?

Aggieman-Thanks for the compliment!. I think at the time (late 1950’s) there were a lot of different spacesuit designs produced. But you are right that the astronauts do look like knights/Michellin men!

Toimi_Tom-Thanks! …space sharks, that is funny! Maybe the man in the front cage is doing a Leonardo DiCaprio impression and yelling, “I am king of the world!”

Wow!! Reminds me of the old TV show “Men Into Space” with William Lundigan. So cool . . .

Nice job on resurrecting a vintage kit! Pretty sure I’ve got one in my stash!

veedubb67-Thanks! It’s not too bad a kit-just needs some clean up.
