Finished P-51 (and first foray into AlClad!!)

Well gang here it is. About my 100th (not really but it feels like it) P-51 but my first model using Alclad. All I can say is if you have not used the stuff…DO IT!!! I know I’ve always heard about how resilient it was and now I am a believer. It masked wonderfully and stood up to handling.

Anywho, this is the Hasegawa offering using Cutting Edge decals. I know you can’t see it but this is also the first time I used Eduard cockpit placards. They really make the front office look a bit more finished. The Alclad is Aluminum weathered with pastel chalks and acrylics. The kit went together nicely but where the spinner meets the nose just seems to have a different contour than, say, Tamiya. The Tamiya seems to be a bit more correct and streamlined but all in all I’d get this kit again. I sorta wished the flaps were dropped but, again, a minor nit pick based on personal preference. So enjoy! Comments are welcomed, good, bad or otherwise. Thanks!

The Dreaded “RED X!” Don’t feel bad, I’ve just gotten to the point where I can post pics.[banghead][banghead]

Well that’s weird. I saw the red “Xs” too but when I went back into it again they showed up! I’ll check again later on and hope they work. They worked for me when I previewed the post before clicking the “Submit Reply” button. I hope FSM doesn’t have it out for me. I know that the check I sent them cleared…

Eric

i can see them fine…

excellent build echolmberg!

Great looking build. I love using Alclad, it easy stuff to use and the end product comes out sweet.

Thad

It really loooks great. I haven’t tried Aclad yet or even NMF, but am planning to soon, and on a P-51 as well.

Thats awesome. I really have to try alclad sometime. The p51 is my favorite plane to model.

Very nice Mustang and nmf my friend. Thanks for the look.

Jerry

Beautiful work, echo, [:)]

Thanks for showing it off! [:)]

Take care,
Frank

Thanks to all for the generous compliments! One thing I wanted to point out was something Thad had mentioned. Alclad is EASY to work with!!! It’s ready to shoot right out of the bottle and boy is it thin! I applied it over a couple of light coats of Krylon gloss black. I also highlighted the gun access hatches with Stainless Steel but you really can’t tell from the pics plus the invasion stripes cover most of it anyway. The narrow panels which surround the exhaust stacks were covered with Bare Metal Foil. After all was said and done I shot the whole works with Testors Dullcote. I was surprised how nicely the Dullcoat ended up even though it came out of a rattle can!

My best to all,

Eric

Looks great echo. I’m curious, as a first timer, what did you used for a primer for the alclad. I know some use alclad’s primer, some future, some krylon gloss black…what was your choice? Haven’t tried it yet, but looking to - people make it sound like it is a gift from on high [:D]

Anyway, your mustang does look great.
Leon

Great work mate. It looks alot better than my first attempt at alclad. Thanks for sharing.

awesome, thanks for sharing.

Awesome model. Amazing finish.

Leon, I used Krylon gloss black out of the rattle can. It worked nicely but I think next time I’ll try something like the Alclad black primer. I sort of like the idea that I can shoot it myself out of my airbrush rather than using the aerosol can. Actually when I used the Krylon I ended up sanding the coat with finer and finer grades of polishing cloths to remove the ever so slight pebbly look resulting from the aerosol can. I’m glad I did. The Alclad really went down nicely on top of the smooth surface.

Eric

good job. What did you use for the green nose? Did you mask the Alclad or the green?

Beautiful job on the Mustang.

Looks great!

Wayne,

I used a mix of Model Master Interior Green and Dark Green and just eye-balled it from the decal sheet instructions. I had black and white pics but nothing else in color. The photos I had showed the plane to be pretty well used and weathered in terms of exhaust staining. I know that for the most part the crew chiefs took great pride in their planes and didn’t let them get overly dirty if at all possible. I used black electrical tape to mask off the nose. First I painted the plane, masked the nose, then painted the green.

Eric

Great looking Mustang… I need to try that AlClad!
