Finished ol' Nooky Booky today! (pics)

hello guys, i would like to start by thanking any of you who posted in my thread “need a pep talk” this week. you guys picked me up out of the dust, brushed me off, and encouraged me to continue this project as it was heading to the closet along with 3 other projects until i calmed down. this forum is a great place to meet fellow modellers and friends. after being in this hobby nearly a year, i have trashed so many kits trying to get them right i was beginning to wonder if i was cut out for this hobby or not!! i finally finished a shelf sitter to go along with my single cieling hanger. even my wife and mother-in-law came in my hobby room the other day and asked, “where are all those planes you bought, why aren’t they finished?” they could care less about this hobby but they are a little curious to see one finished.

anyway, if anybody remembers, this is the stang i posted in the “been in the pits” thread a couple of days ago. this one has the Black Box cockpit and the rest is OOB. the stripes on the top of the wings and elevators shouldn’t be there but i didn’t realize it til’ i had already painted them. i had a little trouble with the checker board nose decal. i ended up having to paint the yellow, and cut the individual squares of orange off the decal and place them separately. if you look hard enough, you can see its not perfect but oh well. there are plenty of mistakes and missing parts and decals, but i’m just stoked to have finally finished one i can sit on a shelf. hopefully, there will be many more.

this is tamiya’s 1/48 scale P-51D.

thanks for allowing me share friends. later.

Wow, she turned out a real beauty! You did an excellent paintjob on her, and I love the subtle wash you applied. Looks fantastic. Kudos for sticking in there mate[8D]. By the way, your photo technique (especially the lighting) is excellent. What setup did you use? I’m asking because a couple of people will be expecting me to finally take some model pics this evening with a rented camera, and I would like those to be presentable[:o)].

Bro if that is just “ok” to you, I wanna see what the “yes!!!” model will look like. Excellent technique, control and thought. Attention to detail is hella good too, makes me kinda embarassed to put mu 17G up in a few days. I will post her a long ways form yours [:-^][:-^]

Very well done, Chris. Glad you hung in there with that one, it is a beauty.

A beautyful model Chris, a very beautyful model.

Top job [tup][tup] thank you for sharing.

Excellent looking job on the stang. So when you going to do an Old Crow stang?

You have every reason to be proud of that silver hoss there. I too have a problem with shelving the kit the first time I make a mistake. I’ve gotten much better as my income has gone down, but at one time I had somewhere around 50 unfinished kits, each one with a problem I would now simply fix and move on (except, maybe, those few where I turned over a bottle of Microweld on two or three sprues at once. That’s when you discover modeling clay or artists clip-on pallette cups!
This may be wrong place, but while we’re on the subject of giving up discouraged, yesterday, after flying along for a couple weeks on Eduard X-1 Profipak, I got to installing my finished etched instrument panel, with fine resin instrument backs and film faces. Eduard sez do it after fuselage is assembled, but I can’t make it fit, no matter how much I trim fuselage and rudder pedals or turn the panel this way and that. So I shelved an otherwise happy build when left side of panel broke off. Downright heartbreaking. Anyone who has buildt this model (and a fine kit it is, though pricy given small number of parts) have any advice for me? I know I can glue back the broken off left wing of instrument panel especially since it has an elaborately scratchbuilt O2 regulator attached to it (that not the problem-- regulator’s not hanging up on anything).[:(]

Awesome job Chris! [tup]
That came out really good and it’s good to see that you seem pleased with it.
Keep up the good work my friend. [;)]

Mike

That looks great!!! I’d be very happy if that was my effort. And if you don’t think that looks great I’d love to see the one that you are really happy with. I make lots of mistakes every time I build a kit, but I just think its part of the learning curve. Even the best modellers in the world make mistakes (we’re all human after all). It doesn’t have to be perfect, just as long as your’e happy with it.

keep up the good work.

Looks Great to me ,excellent paint job and finish.
The photography is top notch as well.

Saltydog,

Super - super job. Thanks for sharing. Love that BMF!

Richard

Bama, keep it up no reason to hang your head about that one.

Thad

Beautiful!

Waaay coool!!

Good golly man! That is what you need for a Pep talk!!! Do it again![:D][^]

[bow][bow][bow][bow][bow][bow]what more can i say

wow that is something, i noticed something how any model of a P-51 we take alot of pride in building those, i guess its just something about those beautiful birds.

Glad you stuck to it and finished - it looks great!! We really are our own harshest critics. I think the very subtle weathering and washes worked very well, indeed. Your lighting of the subjest was really spot on…very professional.
Well done. Just make sure you clean off the excess decal adhesive or the decal solvent as soon as you can - it can mar bare metal type finishes - note the film around the insignia on the port upper.

Almost a year into the hobby? With a kit this good looking? My first five years didnt produce a model half as good as this. No kidding.

Great work, Salty! And the pics are very well-taken too.

A very cool looking bird. Thanks for the pics.
