Finished My First Build M4 Sherman

I am finally finished with my M4 Sherman. I had know problems with the build. I know now from previous post what I had done wrong in the construction. After completing the build I airbrushed using Polyscale OD green, then gloss coated with Future. After this I then applied the decals using Future. This went better than expected. I had first weathered with acrylics, which I was not happy with, so I stripped this off and decided to use a burnt umber oil wash. I also applied finely ground coffee grounds and pastels for the mud. Lastly I applied the dullcoat using Model Master Acryl Clear Flat.

I would love to hear what everyone thinks about this first build’ good and bad. Enjoy the pics. I believe that the flash make it look glossier than it actually is.

Bushi,

First off let me congratulate you on completing your first armor build! [tup] I also want to encourage you to continue experimenting as that’s the best way to learn, dive right in and see what works and what doesn’t, something you’ve already started doing with this build and I hope you’ll continue with. [;)] One suggestion I would offer would be to go back to the areas you’ve applied the wash to and, using a thinner dampened brush, clean-up some of the excess that’s there as a way to “fine tune” the wash the next time you apply one. Sometimes the wash can wander or “bloom”, creating heavy areas where it gathers. With an underlying coat of Future, it should be easy to adjust or clean this up before you seal it in with the Flat coat. Keep up your efforts, the burnt umber wash provides a much better result IMHO vs. the acrylics you attempted previously. [tup]

Nice, Bushi.

If I ever finish the E-100, the Sherman is next in line.

I really like it ! [^][wow] What kit manufacture was this built from ? I recently picked up the Dragon and a Italarei kits for next to nothing that I hope to start on after the Holidays. … What do you have planned for your next build ?

Bushi Thats the Tamiya 1/48 sherman ,right ? It came out real nice for your first build, you should see mine, what you should do is pick up either the Legends or the Verlinden 1/48 sherman stowage kit,any self respecting sherman needs a ton of stowage hanging off the back,it will definitly enahace your build, keep up the nice work,if you like the 1/48 try the Jagdpanther and the t-34 they come out nice too.

Nice job, Bushi, for your first build it looks GREAT!![tup] As previously said, this burnt umber wash looks much better then that acrylic wash. Good choice on removing and applying a new wash.

it’s come a long way, and the end result is great! I’m just as anxious as the others to see what you build next! Tamiya’s 1/48 scale kits are an excellent bunch. I find myself building them more and more.

Thanks to everyone who had a look at my first build, and all the comments.[#toast]

Wbill thanks for the info on the bloom of the wash, but I had already dullcoated.[#oops] I am look foward to trying more to see what else I can learn and experiment with. And thanks again for looking and commenting.[:D]

The kit was the Tamiya 1/48 M4 Sherman early production.

Citadelgrad87 Thanks for lookin and I’ll checkout you E-100.

Summit Thanks and I will be starting on a Tamiya 1/48 M-10 Tank Destroyer for the Lend-Lease GB starting on Jan 1st. But between now and then I am going to start on a Tamiya 1/35 Sturmgeshutz III Ausf B. Two builds at one time. Lets see what happens.

Anthony2779 Thanks for looking and the ideas on the stowage sets and the Jagdpanther and T-34. I will have to pick these up.

Mg.mikael Thank for thje comments and the oil wash does look better. Thought you might like to know that this was a practice build before the Lend-Lease GB started. I can’t wait until Jan 1st get here. I think the Wolverine will come out even better.

Tacobuff thanks for the comments, and I will be purchasing more of the Tamiya kis plus whatever I can find. I am hooked, line, sinker, rod and reel. LOL[(-D][(-D][(-D]

Thanks again everyone.
