Finished F2A Buffalo

Hey all…just completed this Buffalo for our Pacific War GB and wanted to share some pics. It the Special Hobby Midway Buffalo 1/48th scale. Its a real interesting little kit but a beast to put together. Lots of little items that needed special attention and adjusting. Fit wasnt the best but I guess limited run kits always have that problem.

The Buffalo wasn’t the prettiest bird out there but it had its charm. Oh and I added a last pic to give the little beast some scale.

As always comments, suggestions and criticisms are always welcomed.

Carlos

Stubby looking little bird.

Hey, carsanab! Great-looking Buffalo you’ve built! Outstanding paint job on it. I did notice one error, though - I see where you’ve positioned the ailerons incorrectly. If one goes down, the other goes up. You have both down, almost as if they were flaps. Hope that won’t be too hard for you to fix.

Nicely done Carlos. The mistake with the ailerons is very common so don’t feel to bad.

Regards, Rick

Carlos- Bummer about the kits shortcomings around the ailerons, otherwise a splendid model! Has a little bit of an egg-plane look to her, I love it! Well done. [tup]

I know the ailerons aren’t correct… if I could I would have posed them correctly but the kit has a problem, when I cut them out the tops and bottoms, they didnt line up…the tops were about 4mm short, in other words the hinge line on the halves didnt line up so i couldnt pose them “correctly” i wasnt about to go into major reworking of the wings and the cut out ailerons…forget it…there were other bigger things to worry about with this kit.

Lets just call it “Artistic Discretion”[:D]

A little bit of sheet styrene and you can fix your artistic discretion. They are connected to each other via control cables and linkages there isn’t any way short of a crash that would cause them to both droop together like that. It will be worth the fix.

Theres no way im taking this bird apart to fix such a minor item.[yuck] I would rather just take them off and glue them in back in place in line.

Nice work Carlos! [tup] I really like your weathering… not too subtle and not overdone.

I’m also one who doesn’t find the Buffalo to be particularly attractive but you’ve made her look as good as she can. [;)] Plus, I love those gigantic wing insignias… they make her look even smaller than she is.

I really like your Japanese plane! (sorry not familiar with that one) Unlike that funny lookin’ Buffalo, she is a thing of beauty! [:D] And they are both well built!

Well you have my sympathies at least. I found two big sink marks on the fuse of my Me-163B that I’m debating on whether or not to fix. The finish looks great on your Buffalo whether or not you decide to fix it.

You did an excellent job on the Buffalo Carlos. It’s make me want to dig mine out of my stash and build it.

Nice job on the stubborn little kit, Carlos! I lovethe Midway paint scheme on the Buffalos.

Thanks all for your comments…Jeremy…that a Aichi Val dive bomber(Hasegawa kit)…the Buffalo’s would have gone up against these during the Battle of Midway…figuered it was a way to show how small it was against its opponents.

Gordon…if you do and its the Special Hobby kit let me know and I will give you some heads up on what to look out for!

Hi there Carlos.

Great job on the model, I just love this little plane, I plan to build one someday but in a colourful betweenwars scheme.

About the flap,s don´t worry isn´t a very hard thing to fix… my critic will be about the picture, maybe if you can use a background will be great.

The paint job is well done, and I like the weathering, congratulations

saludos

Nice build Carlos. The last pic really shows how little the Buffalo is (or how big the VAL is ).

Nicely done Buffalo… I’ve only built the Tamiya version (I got on a “Yellow-wing Navy” kick for a spell), so I don’t how it stacks up…

After Midway, one rather bitter Marine pilot said of the “Sluffalo” (My nick for it: SLUFF + Buffalo, SLUFF = Stubby Little Ugly Fat Fellow*) that, “It should be kept in Miami as a trainer”… On the other hand, the Finns used it with quite a bit of success against the Soviets… Go figure…

It’s a really ugly plane, but I can’t help wanting to build another… So ugly it’s kinda “cute” (which is something NO combat should ever aspire to be)… That probably explains my choice for a dog… I have a Pug…

Hans…as the owner of both Pug and a Bulldog, I understand your train of thought…

Im sure the Tamiya fell together…this thing was a bit of a challenge. I guess after all has been said and done its not a bad build…Im happy with it.

CS

Ya, the Tamiya kit was a shake & bake in most respects, for sure…

Pug AND a Bulldog, eh? Does the Pug jump around the Bulldog like, “Wesureshowed’emdidn’tweSpike!yeah, weshowed’emwedidwedidwemoiderized’em,didn’tweSpike!”?

That is one fine looking Buffalo. I have two on my screen saver and have been thinking of doing one. I thing you pushed me over the edge.

Hans…unfortunately my Camila is no longer with us…she crossed the rainbow bridge will be 5 years tomorrow Dec 1st…but they did have fun together. Now I only have the pug. The pug was justa puppy and would chew on her ears and would follow her around…it was funny to see them together…the house of the ugly dogs…thats how we were known as…!!![(-D]

Wow, Carlos, that’s awesome. Once I get established again I’m really keen to do an RAF/RAAF/RNZAF Buffalo flown during the defence of Singapore.
