this is the DML 1/35 BRDM-2 (BRDM-3 on the box) w/ AT-5 missiles. its OOB and is my first completely completed model. i painted the base color with model master spray cans of dark desert yellow. i applied washes with tamiya acrylic black, and weathered with artists chalks. hope you like it and i welcome any critiques!
The painting and weathering look pretty good. I love the dusty finish!
The only thing that strikes me as a bit strange are the bright green sand bags–why the odd color choice? Is that normal for that theatre?
Also, would the tubes there be bright metallic? I would imagine that they would glint in the sun pretty badly, giving away their positions pretty easily? Did you decide on that from reference shots, or is it just your interpretation?
i did the sandbags like for two reasons… 1) ive never seen iraqi sandbags, only ones that we gave TO them that are green plastic, and 2) i guess that they would probably be your standard burlap tan color, and i wanted to add some sort of contrast to the model. the bags arent glued in place and i was plannign on weathering them some more or recoloring them entirely. they are just temporarily on the base.
the missiles on the paint guide for the iraqi version said to be either silver or a green mix, but i didnt have the green colors i needed and paint is so expensive these days i just went with a silver paint pen. i put a couple black washes over the tubes and tried some pastels but they didnt seem to want to make a difference on the silver. oh well lesson learned right? (there arent too many reference photos on iraqi brdm-3s as i can find, my guess is they just got blown up before photo ops)
Ditto on the missles; mine are silver too. Anybody have any pics of these?
Overall, I think it looks great! I would recommend using your pastels/pigments a little on those auxiliary wheels between the main wheels-they are a bit conspicuous undusty.
