I know I have not posted much, but I do read here a lot. Anyway, after two months on the workbench I finally completed Academy’s Sukhoi Su-27UB Flanker C - 1/48th scale.
This was my first Academy model and I was pleasantly surprised. I had a lot of fun building this kit. A few things I didn’t like were the cockpit - very underdetailed, and the canopy fit is not that great. A few things I really liked were the weapons - I spent a lot of time working on these, and the front landing gear - lots of parts.
I am still an amateur so I used a lot of new techniques that I learned about in FSM mag and here in the forum. I had never used gloss coating prior to decaling - that produces great results (this technique will be used for all of my future models). I did a lot of dry brushing on the cockpit, the landing gear, the weapons and the gear wells.
A few things I screwed up: The white tips on the rudders do not go down far enough, the right rudder inside leading edge is supposed to be white, the air-brake inside color is supposed to be a yellow. Oh well! This is still the best I have done to date.
One other new technique I tried on this was using putty to fill in some of the gaps and bad seams. It worked pretty well and I will definitely be doing this more.
Some specs for materials used:
All paint is Tamiya. I used my Paasche VL airbrush and Paasche compressor. Model Master Laquer gloss and semi-gloss were used. Squadron putty and Model Master sanding films were used with Tamiya 1500 polishing film. Black artist’s pastel and a host of brushes from Winsor & Newton and other cheapy brands.
Pictures were taken with a Canon S230 digital camera.
I don’t own an airbrush, mine went to airbrush heaven, or wherever they go when they die[:(]. I’ve used the suadron putty before with mixed results, currently I’m using 3M Automotive Glazing Compound. It doesn’t shrink that I can tell. Some of my best paintbrushes are the cheapest one I own[:I]. All of my pictures are taken with a 45 year old Pentax. One of these days I may get a digital camera, but right now I’m satisfied with my old 35, it’s never let me down.
That ain’t bad. Nope, ain’t bad at all[:D]. Really nice paintjob, especially on those missiles! Those must have taken days to mask and paint! Wish I had that much patience. Keep it up Sprokai[8D]
Actually I did not do a wash. That is a technique I have tried but with terrible results. I just don’t know enough about the details of the procedure. So, all the panel lines and rivets were filled in with a pencil. It took many hours!
That’s too bad about the airbrush. I could not imagine modeling without one. I tried a bunch of airbrushes before getting the VL so now I have three or four cheap ones as backup.
hmmm, i recently went on a stag/bachelor party to moscow (that big subway bomb went off 1km away from me when i was there![:0]), and unfortunately SProkai i’ve got to say that the russian “birds” i met over there were a little more alluring, and definitely had a lot less on![;)]
show me your sukhoi in “bare metal finish” and then i’ll be able to judge a little more clearly!![(-D][(-D][(-D]
