Hope you guys like it! Built it OOB except for the noted changes.
The Prop is enhanced by some brass rod for the prop boss and thin tape for the prop sleeves. Brass blast tubes and ignition wires.
Landing wires are flat, 0.4mm brass railroad wire. Flying wires are a combo of flat brass wire and 0.3 and .04 mm styrene rod. The transmitter antenna is fine golf club whipping and the receiver antenna is invisible thread.
I used for the first time Promodeller Black Weathering wash. I tried to keep weathering to a minimum as these pursuit ships were pretty well kept. My example is from the 94th pursuit squadron at Selfridge Field, MI ca 1936.
I added photoetch parts to depict handles for the cockpit, wires and stretched sprue throttles.
This kit is a beauty! Probably the best effort Hobbycraft made!
I really enjoyed building this one.[Y] The most difficult part was the paintjob-especially masking the horizontal stabilizers! I also had to paint the stripes on the rudder as the decals looked lousy.[:@] The decals were difficult requiring massive Solvaset to conform to the compound curves on the cowling and the forward fuselage. [bnghead]
About 30 years ago, I built the same aircraft from a balsa stick model /paper skin kit. I still have it today. The decals are almost exactly the same as yours, except mine is a larger scale, and the fuselage is olive drab. Other than that, they are very similar. Mine is so large, I have it hanging on the ceiling. It;s a neat looking aircraft, any way you build it!
That’s a great looking build! I always loved this plane and you picked a great colors scheme. The only thing I really noticed was the top wire that goes from wing to wing, seems there’s too much ‘slack’ in it. Not sure if thats the one you use monofilament wire for, if so, try running a blown out match underneath it to make it strink a bit.
I think you mean the transmitter antenna. It is made with old golf club wood whipping chord. I noticed in reference photos that the antenna post had a hole in it and the antenna passed from wingtip to wingtip. I did the same thing.
Unfortunately, the whipping has a little give in it due to being on a spool. I tried to straighten it by keeping it under tension for weeks before installing it. Nothing to do short of replacing it. [:(]
Your Pea Shooter looks awesome!!! I love those interwar year aircraft and the yellow wing paint schemes. I built this in 1/32 several years ago. I think it was a Hasegawa kit.
thanks for the replys! I have another of the old hobbycraft 1/48 P-26. Thinking of doing a Olive Drab scheme next.
Will probably get the new starfighter decals to go with it.
