Finally finish my 2nd aircraft, academy’s 1/48 F-86 sabre
Thou the rockets haven’t been added yet (no color instruction in the kit) but the kit was a challenge, especialy the decals, of which some (like the yellow bar stripes) are too big for the micro soil to ,make any difference. But overall the kit was fun and I love the final result, especialy the paper tiger face.
Nice work! One thing that has been mentioned here is that Academy decals are thick and do not respond well to decal solvents. So probably not the size of the decals but the decals themselves.
Nice to see someone did the “other one”[:)]. Built FU-910 myself (see NMF group build page 30)and used some AM decals, knowing the academy ones would probably be a real pita…[swg].
I really like your model even if the NMF isn’t flawless. Makes it looked used. Was that deliberate or 2nd build booboo? Well done, certainly considering this is your second build. Looking forward to see more of your work[tup]
The kit is completely Out of the box, except the scrachbuild orange light behind the cockpit, the original was lost. But it was a very challenging build, especially the alumium body color (which is tamiya spray can, not airbrush since it usualy make a better result). thou it is difficult to avoid touching it while it dries.
I keep in mind not to over weather this one like my last build (Monogram P-38 pathfinder) and most sabre where relitively clean, but to add depth, I use a pre-made black wash by “the detailer” to the aircraft and it work great, I also use a gun metal wash on the machine gun holes and at the back of the aircraft. The cockpit detail is far better than my last build (thanks to dry brush) and oil paint for final weathering (dirt, grease stains etc.). Micro sol help alot on the decal, preventing them to defore and stick well to the model, thou, (like I said) the yellow stripe refuse to sink in, but this isn’t a big issue, there was somany decals, that I’m not sure if I place them all in the right spot.
I decide to make this one as “the paper tiger” since the lovely smile was just awsome, and I didn’t know the sabre was also equipe with missile so I thought, “Why not?”
Well technicaly this is my 3th aircraft (2nd was old Revell’s P-40, but I don’t have it anymore, gave it to a friend) but I have made many other models, most are tanks from the darkside.
Next build: Turning Tamiya F-15 into a stunning flight position, I don’t think I’ll be able to fix the black widow, and the voodoo’s decals haven’t arrived.
Well actually the F-86 didn’t carry missiles in the Korean war just rockets for CAS. But JASDF aircraft carried missiles as well a ROK F-86’s post war. If the F-86 didn’t use rockets it would carry 2 drop tanks.
Not a bad looking plane but the weathering could use some practice but awesome for a second build.
I live in Calgary as well, do you go to Uncle Bills in the N.E.? Best model store in town, but I also go to PM Hobby when they have their 25% off sales.
