After much headache and a little blood I have my new shop set up and have begun to litter the floor with plastic dust. The room is about 13x15 or so. My compressor is over to the left under the blanket. A file cabinet with diorama supplies in it. Nice size work bench (compared to the last one) My tool chest that I rescued from the garbage at a cabinet shop where I used to work. On top of that is my figure parts box (affectionatly nicknamed (the “it puts the lotion on its skin box” by one of my buddies) Next to the right is a wine rack which makes a fantastic magazine rack…guess what this one is full of. The closet holds a metal shelf with accesories kits and small vehicles. My “stash” is on the top shelf. There is ample lighting both above and under the table… The table in the middle is on wheels and is invaluable for laying out books and sprues to keep the work bench clear. The room is also shared with my computer.
edit: I almost forgot. On the side of the black tool chest is a plug that is wired to a dimmer switch right there beside it on a little wood base. I can dial down my single speed dremel (hanging under the right side) to any speed it want. Its a cheap way to do it. There is about 10-15 bucks worth of parts and a few minutes labor in it… works very well. I highly recomend building one or having one built. You can turn down a steel cutter so slow you can count the teeth as they go by…
Couldn’t help but notice the [alien]ware PC. Which model is it? How does it run?
I was in the market, but decided to build my own instead, as for the price I got a monster of a machine [:D]
Excellent! Looks very nice. I can understand your joy after many years of sharing the dining room table with meals and kids homework I was estatic when I finally got a dedicated room. Next thing you need to work on is display shelving for all those fabulous models you’re going to build.
Personal space is definately where its at… But then, I am single so I have a lot of personal space but this is my personal personal space…eh!
zokissima Its the low end one, the Grey. I don’t even thing they still produce it. I say low end… it was a chunk of $$$$ but I like doing 3D animation and playing games so I got what I needed… Its fun though… and BIG!
I love looking at other people’s workshops. We’ll be developing our basement within a few years and it’s nice to have some ‘goals’ for a finished room/space. The two things I really like in your room are the whiteboard (I assume that’s what it is), and the little table on wheels. Great ideas. I’m constantly jotting down little notes on sticky pads and then I end up losing them. The little table could have a thousand uses, including a final assembly area (for those bigger projects) and a photo station.
I guess I am blessed to have the space. All during school I used a tool box and a coffee table. Its nice to have a place for everything. I purposfully have everything out where i can just look around and see whats around. For some reason I’m like a little kid Out of sight… out of mind! So i try to avoid putting things in boxes or storage where I can’t see it. The dry board is VERY handy for marking down notes as you mentioned. I don’t normally like flourecent lights at all but in this case they are easier on my eyes during long sessions. Oh and the television at left isn’t for watching tv. I use it with my computer (dual monitor) behind me to view reference photos…VERY HANDY!!!
I just finshed mine 2 months ago. There is nothing like going in there and working and when I am finished I dont have to pick everything back up because the kids have to eat at the table the next morning.
When my wife and i bought our new house she promised me the extra office room for my workshop. Well, 2 months later I am still out in the garage and her crap is piling up in the aforementioned room.
Ryan
