Finally Finished, Special Hobby 1:32, P-39D Airacobra...

I actually got her done upstate New York at Noreastcon in Schoharie. That show was in late April, 2008. There were a few problems with the kit but nothing horrible. I thought the cockpit was weak in detail. When a resin pit becomes available, that would be a pretty good pick up. However, what they do give you does lend itself well to scratchbuilding and detailing. The wing root could have been better but again, use the old “seam filling” skills and that should be OK. The worst part of the whole thing was the canopy. It didn’t fit well and there was a lot of ffumbling to get it down right.

Still, it was a nice build and there are a few things I’ll do with the second one. Thanks for looking at my post. Have a great day and as always, comments are welcome.

Here are some over all shots…

Here are a few close-ups of the cockpit showing some of the detail I added to busy it up.

Freddie from LI

Great job!
I love the weathering and the IP

Outstanding work, Freddie! I had not seen the Spec Hobby kit before; you have done it proud! Your work on the interior is excellent and very realistic, and your weathering is just right to my taste, not over done. Had you not mentioned specific problems, I would never have known! Thanks for sharing!

Well done Freddie! I looked at this kit at my LHS last week, but was a little discouraged by some aspects of the kit and the price tag. You did a wonderful job on yours. [tup]

Excellent work on the old Iron Dog. The painting and detail are superb.

Whoa! Sweet build Freddie! You tamed that canopy! The IP is outstanding! Any belly shots?

Hey Freddie,

Sweet lookin Cobra you have there…!!! I have both the “D” and the MkI in my stash… And I concur w/ you about the detail or the lack of…

Over kit is really nice and is screamin for attention…!! Hopefully BlackBox comes out w/ a interior… The PE is cool but you can only do so much w/ it!!

Again I really like the over all build…!! Mr Bell would be very proud of this build thats fer sure!!

Thanks fer sharing

Dat’s niiiice…

A friend of mine built this kit and also had trouble with the canopy. But I put it down to the fact that he’s getting older, his eyes are going, and he’s just plain not the modeler he once was. (Mike, you know who I’m talkin’ 'bout!) And there’s also the fact that he has carpal tunnel in both hands. But now that I read your comments, I think I owe him an apology…

Those are the decals are from the kit, yes? Wonder if anyone makes those markings in 48th? Mike, you know?

Fade to Black…

Hey Steve-O,

Who are you talkin about again?? You mean I know him[:P] Ah that guy…!! Know em quiet well…!!

As fer your question about the decal?? I looked through all my P-39 deckals and no such luck…

The door art reminds me that of a P-47’s nose art… The Jug that it was used on stands out very well in my mind but the Squadron escapes me at the moment… Anywho I can’t check due to construction in da Dungeon… Sighs

I even went through all 15 of the “D” kits and no such luck either in terms of optional markings…

I want to say that this kit had them and that was it… I will have a look see a lil later just to make sure…

PS catch any of the lightning on yer camera this round… Sweet show I tell ya!!

Hiya Freddie long time no see.

I’ve heard that there were issues as you mentioned thme but you have done a nice job with what they give in the pit andth conopy looks great. There are nice PE sets for the kit and after I build up some upper arm stength to carry all that metal, I may picked that up for when I get around to my Cobra. Got it as soon as it came out but have beem waitng for a resin pit.

Very nice work! I especially like the weathering.

Nicely done Freddie [tup]. Looks like you handled the canopy fit issues very well.

Regards, Rick

Excellent work, the weathering looks just right.

OH Man! Superb!

Very nice indeed. Love the weathering and the paint. Has that subtle faded look to it. Top marks.
