Finally a CUCV M1008 & M1009

Finally scraped the money together and wouldn’t ya know it… Sold out everywhere I looked…

And the M1008/1009 CUCVs never made the last FSM wanted kit survey… Tsk…

I was in the Canadian Signals reserve force when we got the CUCV Diesel. Yes they were slow but worked well in THE GREAT WHITE NORTH (in other words they would start at -40) The problem for us Canuks at the time is we were still using OLD metal Jerry cans. I repeat OLD. If you refueled a CUCV from them they tended to shed fine particles into the fuel, which in turn plugged the fuel filters and the truck stopped DEAD! Then they had to be recovered and the fuel lines flushed and new filters installed before they would run again. My first experience with this caused me a long 8 mile walk at -20 C. As a result the entire Canadian Armed Forces changed over to the newer plastic Jerry cans. In spite of that event I still liked that model of vehicle.

Our police dept in Iowa got a M1009 from the government back in the nineties. Two officers had to drive to a base in Kansas and drive it home. I was a reserve officer back then and us reserves used it on patrol. It came in the original camo but the dept had it painted black to match our Ford Crown Vic patrol cars. It was the first 4X4 the dept ever had and came in handy during winter storms. It was noisy and rough riding but had a shorter turning radius than the Crown Vics. I remember one night we received a loud party complaint and when we got to the area we had to shut it off to hear where the music was coming from. It was that noisy! It was eventually passed on to another small town dept and the PD got a new civilian 4X4.

Rob, I remember seeing that program. I was a Tank PL back here in the states during that time. There was a scene where Mike Wallace comes upon a tank during the exercise and climbs up on the turret and raps on the TC’s hatch to which the TC promptly replies “get off the GD tank”.

Hey, at least he knocked…[whstl]

Wow, nice seeing this old thread… Yeah, it’s me, Hans von Hammer, back from the dead… Wanted to mention that our Supply Daddy once got his hands on a couple cases of the old PASGT vests, and during our ODS ramp-up, we’d lined the insides of our CUCVs with 'em…

Anyone needs pictures, email me. I have a 1009 sitting in my driveway.
