I am getting fed up with Facebook modeling groups.
Anybody else feel the same way?
Let me give you some examples:
Too much “advertising” of new products and services, and not enough posts showing finished or in progress models from people. I belong to several model groups where they have in their Rules about “No Advertising”. But people still do it anyway.
Iron fisted Admins and Mods who ban you or something else at the drop of a hat and won’t contact you to tell you what you did wrong or won’t let you apologise and make amends. This actually happened to me. I got banned from a “Grumpy” modeling group and the Admins never contacted me to tell me what I did wrong. In fact, I can’t even remember doing anything wrong.
Model groups where your posts are pending because they need to be approved by the Admins. I’m seeing an increase of this by more and more groups. I’ve had times where I’m waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for my posts to be approved. Finally, there’s times where I just give up and delete the post. If an Admin isn’t around to watch the group and approve posts, then maybe they shouldn’t be an Admin anymore.
No vetting of members who wish to join groups. I still see plenty of trolls, scammers, etc. getting through the cracks so to speak. When I used to run a few groups in the past, I made it a habit to go directly to a person’s profile and check them out. If I saw something I didn’t like or made me suspicious, then I wouldn’t approve their request to join the group.
People who post stupid or repetitive questions.
Bots, AI, and more Bots. Particuarly the ones that Facebook uses.
People who post unrelated posts/content to the model group that they are in. If a rule says to please keep topics to a certain content, then please do so.
It’s gotten to the point where I hardly post anything in any of the model groups I belong to. I’ve been “browsing/looking” more and more lately. At some point in the future, I may just end up leaving Facebook.
I know nothing about Facebook forums, other than I do not belong to any of them. From the outside, it looks to me like they are where “everybody” has gone. I have no concept of how a Facebook forum works other than only members can access them.
Is it that being on Facebook allows people to get deeper into other people’s business? I have zero on-line presence other than a few non-Facebook modeling forums.
I Created over 24 Modelling Groups ,.Each with its own Theme , winter war ,pacific, desert battles ,dioramas ,combat aircraft ,.ship models Figure painting .each member is vetted by Me ,.all my groups Do Not Allow Any Advertisement,. members are given 1 chance only ,.if you get Removed it is because of your own activites as Rules Apply to All Members,.the only posts that are held for review are those by members who have a problem “Following the Rules”..i have Zero patience for Stupidity ,.you will probably be warned or removed ,.Any and all Bots/AI are immediately de-activated ,.post that are Not on Topic are Removed ASAP,.Dont let a few Bad Apples spoil your Fun,. check me out i can direct you to a Group that will probably satisfy your modelling needs ,.best part is it is Free,.. I belong to a 1/200 Trumpeter Titanic Facebook group where, if starting a new “thread” the OP MUST post a picture as well, to accompany the text. Not sure why. I’ve only just commented on others threads. Never started my own. I’m not on there much and mostly just use it for reference.
I’m a member of two groups there, one for 1/700 ships, another for What-if, and they’re pretty much someone posts a model and people offer positive comments and occasionally polite feedback to help make the 1/700 more accurate. Nothing toxic, just modelers sharing. I’m also a member of my local IPMS and the Ship Model Society of New Jersey, so I’m social online and in person!
I can only speak for my own personal experience, but i have not encountered what is described in the opening post. Granted i am only in a handful, two of which are for local clubs. So as with so much in life individual results will vary.
Get off Facebook and i bet your outlook on people goes up 110%. If you feel you need to be on it for family photos or otherwise so be it but 8 havent missed it in the least
Many online personalities have gone to FB and then left FB to go to IG (Instagram). FB groups and pages can be viewed if that page or group privacy setting is set to ‘public’ (the globe icon), without logging in of even having an account there. I have several nonFB online forums accounts as well as an FB and IG account.
For most the draw was convenience because you knew most of the accounts that you would ‘friend’, in real life. Then you could communicate together without emailing each other every time. Then pages and groups started being created for specific subjects. You can set your own post settings to friends only or friends of friends or public. Basically it’s convenient to be in the same realm to do all the fun stuff you want to do.
