feathered or hard?

G’day

Was the demarcation line between the olive drab and nuetral grey on USAAF aircraft in WW2 a feathered or hard edged line? I particularly want to know about P-47D razorbacks in this scheme. What was the colour on the inside of the engine cowling of these aircraft?

Thanks.

I’m certainly no expert, but most razorback’s seem to have the hard transition. I currently working on a hasegawa razorback, and I’m finishing the inside cowling in Zinc Chromate yellow. Some finished models I’ve seen use Zinc Chromate green in varying shades. I think it has to do with which factory the fighter came from.

Crockett,

Where do you get that zinc-chromate color? Who makes it? Is it an enamel or an acrylic?

My hobby store has no clue what color I’m talling about! :frowning:

I feathered my B-17G, and that’s based on photos I’ve found of that particular aircraft. You might try a Google image search for P-47s and see what it turns up. Of course, in black and white, the transition might be harder to distinguish.

Testors offers an enamel “ZINC Chromate” that I picked up at Hobbyland. It is the Yellow/green color. If your hobby store guy doesn’t know about it - find another guy/store who builds/sells US aircraft! You can also mix your own - a little yellow - medium green and a touch of black - Check out the latest issue of FSM for an excellent pictorial on the bubbletop P47 D, the author addresses cockpit interior colors and there are great shots of gear wells/doors etc. so you can match your homemade colors.

just a tip on the zinc chromate for you.I use model master acryl. They have a yellow zinc chromate(an00627) and a green zinc chromate (an00628).They also sell interior green (fs34151).Hope this helps.
