Alright, not this type of subect or post has been seen here on the forums a few times but here’s what I was thinking. List your top three aircraft for each catagory. Personally I have listed mine based mostly on looks but also with reference to their contribution to the given catagory or mission. You can use whatever criteria you want, but my main idea was to give the idea of “it just looks damn good” with respect to the particular catagory. At some time of my choosing (and depending on how many responses there are), I’ll close out the thread by posting all the responses and rank all the aircraft types per catagory including the number of votes per aircraft type. For simplicity don’t get too dang technical like FW-190-2VII-30 rather just put down FW-190 or FW-190 Dora. An F-4D looks different enough than an F-4E so that’s O.K. but I think you get the idea. Any way here goes:
Prop fighter Jet fighter Bomber Cargo/Utility
P-51D 1. F-106 1. B-17 1. C-47
FW-190 2. F-8 Crusader 2. HE-111 2. C-130
Spitfire 3. F-4C/D/N/S 3. B-25 3. UC-64
Trainer/Observation Helicopter
OV-10 Bronco 1. UH-1
O-1E Bird Dog 2. C/HH-3E/P
T-6/SNJ/Harvard 3. Bell 47
So there ya have it. Everyone who want’s to chime in have a go at it. It’ll be interesting in the end to see how well our model manufacturers actually pruduce examples of the aircraft that we all are fond of and would all want to build.
I haven’t given thought on the last three catagories but here are my favortite jets, props and bombers:
Prop Plane
Spitfire
F6F Hellcat
Early Bf. 109s
Jet Planes
F-105
Me 262
Bombers
B-17
A-6
A-1 Skyraider
Most of these planes are already well represented in nice to excellent kits, which they should be because they are popular airplanes. I think a good question to ask (and I think this reflects your last point salbando) is to list your top three favorite airplanes and then list you top three kits you would like to see made or newly tooled. My list of top three kits i would like to see made/newly tooled is as follows:
Prop Plane
TBD (1/48-New Tool – Come On AM)
A/B-26 Invader (1/48 New Tool)
P-61 (1/48 New Tool – I believe one is in the works by one of the European manufacterers)
Jet Planes
F-105 (1/48-New Tool w/ lots of bombs!!!)
F-100 (1/48-New Tool)
U-2 (1/48-New Tool)
Bombers
B-17 (1/48-New Tool)
A-6 (1/48-New Tool)
B-26 (1/48-New Tool)
I guess I would just really like to see Monogram’s catalogue from the 80’s updated too todays standards because I don’t have time to do it myself!!!
My short list of most favorite planes are… the F-4’s, B-17, BF-109G6, P-51B/D and the ME-262. Would be great to see a 1/32nd B-17 kit come out, I think it would sell like hot cakes!
That’s nothin’ - He signed my baseball glove during spring training at Rendevous Field in Mesa, AZ when I was about 11 yrs. old! He signed it right next to Reggie Jackson, IIRC.
