I thought it might be fun, to show the progress of a Dad - Daughter build.
Long story short: I was going through my kits, and Kayla (my daughter) 10 years old, showed interest in building a kit) Now, mind you. I’m an Armor guy but still like to build aircraft, when I get the chance (the canopies sort of turn me away)
Anyhow…she REALLY wants to build with me and she chose:
Off course, not the most detailed kit, but perfect.
I will be building along side her, with something similar:
This will be our little family “Group Build” and hope you enjoy the show. Mind you, I will be guiding her through the steps but, the color choices are hers. Just a fun build.
@ Eric: I think what really peaked her interest, was our Armor group build. If she doesn’t stick with it…at least she tried, ya know? I won’t be mad if she doesn’t

I’ve been a builder since I was 5yo, and have fond memories of the time spent by my brothers and I, building the old Aurora “Famous Fighters” with my dad. I’m 46 now, and my 7yo daughter has been building snap kits alongside me while I work on my latest project at my workbench, for about 2 years now. There’s nothing better than the time she spends w/ dad, no matter if building her latest plane, or playing outside, etc… ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN!!! They grow up too fast, the memories you create now will stay with her. Plus the skills learned on such projects will benefit her in the long run. Have fun & keep us updated!
The best memories I have, of building kits is this: my dad had a Monogram B-17 he used to work on, after dinner. He was never a painting guy (no airbrush or spray cans) but I remember how amazed I was, when he finished it. He took the time, after all that building, to hang it from the ceiling, in my room.
I can still see it hanging there, I thought it was the biggest model ever made!
Very cool, my 10 year old boy has taken a keen interest in the hobby, i have a feeling he will stick with it…looking forawrd to seeing some WIP pics[Y]
Awesome Taps88! I am looking forward to the progress pics. Good choice on subjects too. At least jets usually have less canopy frames to mask around. These shouldn’t be too bad.
I started with showing Kayla how to read the instructions, use sprue cutters, lightly sand and so on. She couldn’t wait to get started, she was having a blast:
This is her progress so far. The tiny fins on the armament, where giving her problems but, once her first couple were done…it was a breeze. She has the front landing gear on,instrument panel on, both halves sanded and ready to put together:
As for mine…I have left-right fusalage done and wings setting as we speak. I got rid of all the raised panel lines, on the fusalage halves. This kit is a rebox of an old Hawk kit so, it also had raised areas, for decal placement. It’s a fun build so, I won’t be rescribing any lines sanded off.
Awww, I wish my kids were into them. My oldest was into it for a few years, then high school struck. My youngest son likes them, but isn’t into painting with the AB (dad comes in there) and the daughter was briefly into building a VW bug. I somehow lost the directions for the kit.
Tell her she’s making good progress and to take her time. We all know how kids want things done quickly.
Kayla will read the post when she gets home. I have the day off from work and Kayla made me promise, I wouldn’t touch her model.
I used the morning, to get the wings glued to the fusalage, on mine…OMG there were gaps everywhere. the bottom of the wing halves, under the cockpit, where at lease 1/8" shorter than the fusalage. It took some putty and lot of sanding to get it looking even close, to aerodynamic [:@]
Before anyone asks…No, I didn’t forget to add the cockpit, since none came with this kit…just a figure, that sits on a bar, between the halves. Mmm, comfy and safe [:P]
