This is the testors kit. Only changes I made were a PE cockpit, wheel wells and gear doors and the P-61 cowl to currect the curve in the nose. I can’t believe I cut the end off a kit and successfully put on another but I’m very happy with the result. I hand painted with Darl Sea Blue MM Acrylic and used the kit decals. orange stripe came out much better than expected as well, thanks Tamiya Tape! [tup] Sorry if any are just a bit fuzzy. Thanks for looking.
Outstanding work! You did an excellent job on your Bearcat. I always enjoy seeing these birds every year at the EAA fly-in. They look tough just sitting there on the tarmac. [tup]
A classic kit. I built one years ago and buggered it up - it didnt turn out as nice as yours. I’ve ended up with another one and the Hobbycraft “Frenchie” in the stash. Maybe I can get one that nice next time.
Tell us why you feel the stripe was such a surprise…
very nicely done! hand painted? good job! As for the shiny “pics”, try angling your light a tad, so it does not reflect of the Future/Gloss coat, I had the same problem!
Cheers, thanks for sharing
Thanks again guys, you sure know how to make a joe feel good. The nose idea came from a Modelling Madness review. I just happened to have a bashed extra P-61 kit so I went for it. Here’s the link: http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/allies/us/jacksonf8f.htm
As for the stripe, The paint went on thin over the dark blue so it took a few coats. Thing I like about MM acrylics is they sure do dry smooth with little to no streaks. I’m reall happy with this one but I have decided I don’t like the PE cockpits, think I’ll stick to resin. Just too many tiny parts for old 42 y.o. eyes.
Very nice job! I was just curious as to what color the plastic was. I built one way long ago and it was a chromed silver plastic. Yours turned oy much better![tup]
Well I don’t know if 42 is soooooo old, but I agree with you on the PE. Give me a simple cockpit, with maybe belts and buckles, let me close the canopy and I’m good.
Maybe in 1/32 more might be better, but in 1/48 and 1/72, having a good impression of “gadgety business” to the office seems to suffice. I did just that in a P-40E. I got a nice resin seat and made belts and buckles from tape and foil. Then I added fiddly bits of sprue and wire to the cockpt. No PE, no other resin but the seat and you know what? It looks pretty good!
In an F8F, you can’t see much in that cockpit anyway. Besides, around my house, 'aint no one gonna look in there but me and the cat - no matter how much detail I cram in. [swg]
