F86 Sabre question

Could someone tell me what colour the wheel wells were on this craft.

I’m currently building the Australian variant, the CAC Avon Sabre, and have many conflicting pics, some showing the wheel wells in a green colour, and others showing them as a BMF finish.

The green finish, maybe chromate or interior, seems more fitting, as the pics with BMF are of restored crafts, and I feel some people may have taken some artistic licence with these.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Sean

Sean, from the photos I have,I would go with the zinc chromate green.Digger

Is the green also on the wheel well doors???

Yes. To my knowledge “Chromate Green” was used on ALL interior surfaces as a rust inhibitor from the factory. Other paint would be applied as specified from the country that placed the order.

Green is an appropriate color for the wells. But the doors interiors (in the ones I’ve seen) were left in BMF. This includes one of the Connecticut ANG camo job birds.

According to the references I have, the wheel bays were Interior Green. The inside of the wheel bay covers & the dive brake doors were done in either Interior Green or Silver lacquer. If you don’t have a confirming pic, I’d go with the Interior Green.

Regards, Rick

Yep, if you want to go with the most common configuration for a North American built Sabre, it’ll be interior green with aluminum laquer doors. And in the case of the Sabre, there is no need for a long argument about the shade of green. Good old MM interior green will give you a pretty exact match. Now I don’t know with absolute certainty about the ones that were actually built in Canada. The two Combat Jets Sabres were both Canadian birds with the Orenda engines, the wheel wells and doors had not been repainted, and they were all silver inside. Also, the Canadian Orenda Sabres, as well as their CT-33 Silver Stars (I forget the Canadian designation), have a big, oval-shaped exhaust hole on the spine. That’s a quick way to tell a Canadian warbird at an airshow. American Sabres do not have this.

Thanks for that guys, muchly appreciated[:D][^]

Well… in the interior of the whell wells and the airbrakes, in The FS (I can’t remember the number) Interior Green… but in the inner sides of the air brakes and whell well doors is the same color of the aircraft… I mean Silver, or natural metal…

MM interior green my friend just got back from wright patterson where there sits a beautiful sabre and the winner is green!
