F86 BMF

Hello all. Ive been experamenting with differant ways to do BMF on my Saber for a GB. I need your HONEST oppinions of what I have. Some have been sprayed with futur before applying Hawkeyes Powders. Ive used his Alum. paint & alum powders for this. also wet sanding with 2800 paper then applying the powders. So what do you think? Do they look "real " enough? Please let me know what you think. I want to get this right befor I start on the main body…Haarv

Hey, Harv, looks pretty darn good to me thus far! Hawkeye’s stuff is first rate, and you seem to have really found the secret to applying it realistically. I’m a devotee of foiling, myself, so I have little experience with paint, but I like what I’m seeing here! Keep the prog pics coming!

What are you using to do the polishing with?

Gerald, some of it was applied with the shoe polish sponggy thingy, most was with a soft t-shirt and buffed with same…Harv

Honest opinion, it needs work. The panels look a little to weathered and beat on to represent an in action airframe, IMO.

Exactly how did you do it? I see hints of some very convincing looking NMF work in there.

HK, thanks for the comments. The leading edge flapes were first pwdered and buffed. Then sprayed with future. Sanded with 2800 grit and then more alum. powder and buffed. The flaps were sprayed with Talon alum. paint (acrylic), sanded and then powdered and polished. The rear elevators were painted , futured then sanded. then powdered and buffed. I think these look to “silver” to me. The flaps look ok but there are some areas I need to sand more and add powder to. The leading edge flaps are a little too weathered, but I like them. I`m hoping that I can get the right ballence befor doing the body…Harv Also I might add that pics were taken outside in the mornig, in shade and was a little overcast.

Looking good. Just be sure to get rid of some of those scratches. I like the weathered look of the leading edge slats. Maybe a tad too weathered, but the effect you’ve done does looks like metal wing parts!

Thanks Trexx, my friend. Yea I know about the scratches. I need to go over a few areas…Harv

Did you watch the video on my website yet?

You should be able to get anything from dead flat aluminum to a near chrome like finish…just depends on what you want.

Just keep in mind that 2800 grit is pretty coarse to try and produce anything resembling a mirrored finish. In the Micromesh system you should go up through at least 8000 or 12000 to make sure your getting rid of all the scratches. Don’t forget to polish perpendicular to the previous grit as you work your way down in grit size. This does two things: 1) It makes it easier to be sure you’ve finished polishing out the previous sized scratches. 2) It reduces the formation of facets that can cause specular reflection (sort of looks like orange peel on a gloss finish but it’s not quite the right description)

Dcoponell & Gerald. Thanks for the tips. I checked with our local hardware store(closest thing around) for a Dremel tool. They do have a couple and one is cordless, I`m considering getting it. And yes Gerald. I did watch your vidio. Thank you for that. It will help alot!!..Harv
