F8 crusader + -

recently I asked for oppinions on the Trump F-100. I got TONS of good advice on it. Soooo …now I`d like all of you to let me know what you think of the Trump F8. Good bad indiferent. What variants can you do, and any AM available. Thanks in advance…Harv

Dunno about Trumps, but I had fun with this F-8…[8D]

Howdy Harv,

Ya know I have not really heard anything lately on this bird except the usual gripes about having to many rivets…

Thats ok I am going to soon tackel the 1/48th Hasie F-8 & dress it up as my Dad flew her out of NATC Pax Riv, Flight Test

Hopefully Trumpeter got the stance corrected… Unfortunately Hasegawa missed the boat in that category!! She squats to low in the rear…

When is the expected date? At any rate I am still lookin forward to seeing her @ myLHS

Flaps up,

Mike

Tom Cleaver says it’s one of the best so far from Trumpy… It’s huge too!

Of course I have every one of Trumpys 32nd scale jets, but I’m a big Trumpeter fan anyway…so if they do a jet…I’m buying it!

He made one mistake in his review. At first I thought I may have miscounted the 5 inch twin Zuni rocket launchers. He said there are four launchers. I went back into my kit and did a double check. There are only two launchers provided. Also he did not mention the area under the raised wing being too deep.

Bad to the Bone!!

If I am correct, there is an AVIONIX cockpit already available…

The cockpit was released before the Trumpeter F-8E hit the market.

I have been very eagerly awaiting this kit…actually, when I first came across trumpeter’s 1/32 scale jets–the first one I bought was the A-10–I actually wrote to them and asked for an F-8. I reasoned that it was a not-too-common model subject, but one of the most important USN fighter jets and would make a very popular kit. I would LIKE to think that they listened to me, but thats just wishful thinking…ah well, no worries, they made it anyways!

my question is this–I have been building aircraft models since I was a kid, and I am in my 30’s now, but I dont have any experience with making my own decals. My dad was a line AMM on the Crusader on the old 27-Charlie class carriers back in the 60’s and I want to finish this as the plane he was plane captain on. So far, I have not seen anything for aftermarket on this plane except for the avionix cockpit set…does anyone have any updates on AM stuff, particularly decals?? I DESPERATELY want a VF-13 AJ-1-double-nuts F-8!!

f8,

If you are going to try your luck at making custom decals DO NOT BUY THE TESTORS DECAL MAKER KIT!!! It’s CRAP!!! I have used it and the decal bonder sprayed on way to thick even with spraying on light misting coats and it will not stand up to decal setting solutions. The only good thing it included was the Surething decal maker software but it is only a basic edition.

Here is what to do…(my recommendations)

  1. Go to papillo.com and order water slide decal paper. Order both clear and white. You get 10 sheet sets of 8.5X11 decal paper for nominal price of $10.00 + shipping which beats out Testors Decal paper which only comes as 5 sheets of 5x7 for the same price. You can also contact decal paper makers for free samples of decal paper. If you use a ink jet printer, order ink jet decal paper for that. If you use a laser jet printer order laser jet decal paper. Yes there is a difference. Use Krylon Crystal Clear Gloss spray in the rattle can to seal the ink jet printer ink to the decal paper.

  2. Go to decalgear.com and order the Surething Decal Maker Standard Edition software. This version allows you to use any saved images from your computer to make a decal from. You can download it from their web site after purchase and they will also mail you a CD of the program also.

  3. If you have Photo Shop or Paint Shop Pro you can make your own decal templates for your F-8. If not and you cannot afford to buy the software you can get a photo/graphic editor program called Paint.net and it is FREE. You can download it here: http://paint.net/ .

This is how I did it and after I learned how to use the programs I have great decals for my kits this way.

Give it a try.

I don’t agree that the Testors decal film is not useable, I have used it successfully. It may make inkjet markings bleed, but anything water soluble will do that. Perhaps a few dust coats before you apply a wet coat will work, but using a lacquer gloss coat between the decal film and the ink may work as well. I think the Testors paper is nice, I have used it with an inkjet and the Testors spray can with light coats. My preferred paper is from Tango Papa, a small operation. Papillo is ok but a bit thick. I use it for larger decals. You can airbrush the Microscale decal film, it probably dries a bit thinner than the Testors spray can. When you order paper, if you are using an inkjet make sure you get paper for an inkjet printer. The paper used in an ALPS or a laser printer is different since it can be less absorbent and must withstand higher temps when printing.

I have an ALPS MD-1000, an HP color laser printer, and an HP inkjet printer. The inkjet actually is more verasatile and can produce higher resoulutions and better fidelity in some colors and artwork. Just no white ink, and harder to get to the model sometimes.

Hmm, I guess now is when I might wish I didn’t already have 8 1/48 F-8’s. But I just didn’t want to run out of fighters…

Are you guys able to make opaque decals this way? So far I’ve only made translucent type decals, so any light coloured decals are useless over dark surfaces.

Gotta use the white decal paper…
